Custom RPK74

My RPK74 project has been sitting around for months in a half finished state so I decided a few days ago to get a shift on with it. It's not totally complete yet but it is in skirmish condition at last.

Here's a pic of it along side my AKS74N and AKS74U for size.

Another shot with the bipod deployed.

    Parts involved;

The base is a CYMA 031 AK74, the gearbox is still the 031's gearbox but I may be installing my TM one instead, it now has a Deepfire 1 joule spring.

The receiver is also still the 031 plastic one, it's quite tuff but I'll be replacing it with an Element metal receiver and side mount so I can use my Kobra sight with it. Receiver cover is a flat type from an SRC RPK47, SRC made a mistake on that, the RPK47 has a ribbed receiver and the 74 has a flat so mine is correct.

The foregrip is from the 031 and while not exact to the RS RPK74 grip it is close enough. The clubfoot stock is again from an SRC RPK47 repainted black.

Front sight post is an AK47 type and the rear leafsight is an AK74 type from the 031, I'll be replacing this with a CA full RPK74 leafsight that has a second dial for windage adjustment.

Muzzle break is from the JG AK SVD, I need to get an Element RPK74 break which is proving a problem, rsov used to stock them but they don't seem to anymore. I can't find anywhere else that has them :(

The barrel and bipod are from a JG AK SVD. This presented the most difficult part of the conversion. The barrel had to be cut down by about 5" to the correct length and then deburred so it could be locked off with the body which it now is. The AK gas block is 15mm in diameter where it goes over the barrel, the AK SVD's barrel widens to 17mm's about half way down, I had to dremmel the interior of the gas tube and the lower forgrip trunion to get them on. About 8 hours work.

Once all this was done I gave the clubfoot stock, receiver cover, gasblock, barrel and foresight 3 coats of paint.

Rate of fire with a 9.6v battery is around 800 RPM.

Just need to order an A&K 3000 round sound activated drum mag (5.45 type, not the steel 7.62 type) and I'm good to go :D

Note: I put this in the discussion section as it isn't a review of a stock AEG but if the mods think it belongs somewhere else feel free to move it.

One of my team mates bought an SRC RPK47 which he'll be getting real wood furniture for. I swapped him his flat receiver cover for a ribbed one and salvaged the faux wood stock, bit of paint and Roberts your fathers brother.

damn thought ya might have found a cheap source or something.

You could get the same effect by painting a wooden RPK stock black, wood stocks are easy to get. The feel would be a bit off as the real RPK74's stock is synthetic but in terms of looks it should be no different.

O yea it would most likely be a wooden stock which id spray black, its just i find em a little pricey :(,
Have ya giving her a debut in the field yet?

She was actually out once a few months ago in a condition that was hardly skirmishable, the barrel wasn't even locked off :p Didn't stop one of my team mates getting about 17 kills that day with her ;)

Indeed. I need 3000 rounds of drum mag goodness to offset using 100 round mid-caps all the time :)

It's a bit difficult to give an exact time on the work since it was layed up for a few months in a half complete state. I'd say around 15-20 hours in all, the longest and hardest part being the Dremeling of the gas block. The painting was very quick because I used an Acrylic based spray which took about 5-10 minutes to dry between each coat.

Hmm, you can get the 031 quite cheap from Shiva (99 Euro), get the revision one version which already has a side rail, might as well have it since it's at no extra cost. You can get an RPK conversion kit from rsov for about 80 quid, not Euro. With that you'd have the bones of an RPK74. You should be able to get a flat receiver cover from UNcompany or WGC, wouldn't cost too much, maybe $20. The RPK rear sight is $26 from UNcompany.

All told I'd say you'd be in the region of 200-300 Euro total depending on what deels you can get.
