PartTime Postgrad

    Hey all,

I'm a part time Postgrad in DCU, only over in college during the week at nights and sometimes on Saturdays. Have a few questions that hopefully someone can help with.

    1) Is there anywhere to go on campus after 6 for a coffee, that's indoors, where you can read aswell? There's the bar, of course, but it's dim and ye'd can't sit there and read notes...

    2) This is more related to my course, but is there any quiet computer labs that you can use after hours? The ones I've been in seem to always have a few lads dicking about in them. It's not easy to study when that's going on. (I sound like a grumpy old **** now, don't I?)

    3) How do you connect your laptop to the network, and also can you access your h:\ drive from it if you do? (I've a feeling the answer is 'no' to the latter)

I'm sure there's more questions I'll come up with in time. Any response appreciated...

uhm you could try the zero 1 cafe under the library for coffee after 6 and a place to read but not sure about the opening times.

computer labs - are you talking about the computing building? uhm any of the labs on the ground floor are usually safe enough. L125 is the busiest and noisiest. have a walk about and see. differs from day to day.

for connecting to the network (wifi) youl need a wireless card, just select school of computing then configure your proxy settings, dont know them off hand. you are right you cant access your H drive from laptops

    hope this helps

I believe there are computing facilities reserved for post-grads in the library. That would be worth checking out. I am a full-time post-grad but generally have access to a PC in the college when I need one so I haven't checked this out myself yet. But I think I saw something about this recently.

You can access your unix account, which is similar to your H: drive. Use WinSCP.

As for the wireless in DCU, there are two different wireless networks.

A lot of the labs are very busy alright. I like to use L124 when I'm getting important work done. It's only for post-grads so it's usually quiet enough.

    Thanks!

I tried connecting to the wireless LAN on Saturday from the Library, but apparently you need to register your wireless card with Computing Services before you can get it to work properly. Doh!

    Thanks again people :)

    Hi JonT.
Isn't DCU absolutely unbelievably bad at communicating their services etc to new students?

For a coffee in a bright place the best place I have found is (as mentioned) the place under the library. They are open till 8 normally. They do great soup there btw.

Can I jump in on this and if anyone knows if there are any study rooms in DCU that are not in the library? I can't find any anywhere. :(
