    Derek Mooney has registered the largest increase of any national broadcaster in the latest JNLR research, which was published this afternoon.

    Airing from 3 to 5pm, Derek's weekday RTÉ Radio One Mooney show has gone up 18,000 to 160,000 listeners.

    The figures also make excellent reading for
    Today With Pat Kenny (up 9,000 to 279,000),
    Ronan Collins (up 8,000 to 177,000),
    The Gerry Ryan Show (up 2,000 to 327,000)
    The Colm & Jim-Jim Breakfast Show (up 11,000 to 179,000).

    Today FM have come up trumps in the latest JNLR figures, which see the station gain a substantial audience.


    Champagne corks are popping as we speak in Abbey Street where Today FM are celebrating some notable audience increases.

    Ian Dempsey is up from 239,000 to 240,000;
    Ray D’Arcy 246,000 to 249,000;
    Ray Foley 170,000 to 172,000;
    Tony Fenton 135,000 to 143,000;
    Matt Cooper 193,000 to 204,000, the highest figure in the history of The Last Word.

    Also doing very nicely, thank you is Alison Curtis’ The Last Splash, which over the past year has seen its reach go from 18,000 to the present 40,000.

    JNLR FIGURES FOR OCTOBER 2006-SEPTEMBER 2007 RELEASED

    Results from the JNLR/TNSmrbi survey for the period October-September 2007 were released today (Thursday15th November). The survey results indicate that 85% of the adult population were listening daily to a mix of national, regional and local radio throughout the country.

    For the purposes of comparison, figures for this survey period are compared with the July 2006-June 2007 figures. The main changes and highlights when compared with the most recent book are as follows:

    National
    Listenership to any regional/local was 52%(-1) when compared with the previous survey period. The reach figures for national stations were the same with the exception of Newstalk 106-108FM who increased their reach to 6% (+1). RTÉ’s Radio 1, 2FM and Lyric services stayed at 23%, 18% and 3% reach respectively, while Today FM’s figure remained at 16%.
    With regard to market share, the figure for any regional/local station in the 7a.m.-7p.m. period was marginally lower than the July 06-June 07 figure at 48% (-0.8). The changes in market share across the national stations showed some small fluctuations: RTÉ Radio 1’s market share was 21.2% (+0.3), RTÉ 2FM was 12.7 (-0.3) while Today FM’s and Newstalk’s market share increased by 0.1% to 12.5% and 3.3% respectively. RTÉ Lyric FM remained the same at 1.7%.

    National (excluding Dublin and Cork)-local stations
    The October ’06 to September ’07 saw mixed fortunes for the local stations with almost all experiencing some increase or decrease. The top five local radio stations for the survey period were as follows:

    Regional-South East
    Beat 102-103FM’s weekday reach figure remained the same at 18% when compared with the previous survey period while its market share figure decreased slightly to 11.7%(-0.6).

    Dublin-local stations
    FM104 continues to be the most listened to local radio station in the Dublin market with a listened yesterday figure of 20% (-1) and a market share of 12.5% (-0.2) Other stations to record changes in both reach and market share were 98FM, at 15% reach (-1) and 11.7% market share (-1) and Q102 with 9%(-1) reach and 6.3%(-0.1) market share. Spin 1038 and Dublin’s country both maintained their reach of 12% and 3% respectively, but saw minor changes to market share; 5.2% (0.1) and 2.5%(+0.1). Finally, Phantom 105.2 maintained a reach of 2% and market share of 1.2% when compared with the previous survey period.

    Cork-local stations
    In the Cork franchise area, Cork 96FM/103 County Sound achieved a reach figure of 46%(-1) while market share increased slightly to 52.9% (+0.3). Cork’s Red FM increased its listened yesterday figure to 18% (+1) and market share to 10.3% (+0.2) Separated figures were also provided for Cork’s 96 FM and Cork’s 103FM County Sound as follows: Cork’s 96FM had reach of 34% and market share of 39.1% while Cork’s 103FM County Sound had a reach of 14% and market share of 13.8%.

    The newstalk figure of 6% in thier first full 12 months of (near) national coverage, shows how hard it is to break the habits of a listeners lifetime.

    Cheers Mike, Yeah seems everyone did well, would be intresting to see how Newstalks breakfast show is doing i presume if there is no marked increase heads could roll.

    Delighted for Matt Cooper and his team. I seem to recall various nay-sayers knocking him when he took over from Dunphy. I think Today FM's secret is consistency... They stand behind their on air people and let them build the audience over time.

    Contrast that with RTE and the chopping and changing and meddling with schedules they seem to do every time this survey comes out.

    Colm and Jim Jim haven't really done a whole ton. Looks like 5,000 listeners ahead of when Marty Whelan was there. It was inevitable that listeners would migrate after Tubridy, but I don't think they gave Whelan a fair crack of the whip.

    Couldn't agree more with you on your first comment. Its so important that MD's or PD's have faith in presenters.

    As for your second comment I'm afraid I'm gonna say its been a tough owl slog for Colm and Jim Jim. Alot of people wanted to see their heads roll especially at another station or two, but its what you would call a steady start. Truth be told Marty's figures were worse when they got the gig. He managed to lose nearly 40000 listeners in 6 months.

    The one thing that really pi**es me off on the Matt Cooper show is the amount of ad breaks, it's crazy. He also says he's going over to the traffic news which turns out to be a minute on the traffic jams and then straight into another ad break. Average break is 4 minutes and there are at least 5 every hour and then some competition or other. This leaves very little time for hard news and comment. Shame really'cos I always switch over and I'm sure I'm missing something !

    In fairness i think the majority of shows have 4 or 5 breaks an hour thats how they make money, in The Last Words case their advertising slots would be very valuable in light of great listenership figures.

    I agree - but it's still a pain in the arse to listen to.
