Can anybody tell me if this is true or not? My brother and I are planning on getting a PS3 in the next week or so and we also have a HDTV at home, I only use component for the 360 so theres no DVD upscaling from that, I know the new models with HDMI upscale so I would presume the PS3 which always had HDMI can upscale DVDs to high definition?

Copied straight from online PS3 manual:
    DVD Upscaler

Adjust settings for upscaled output when playing a DVD. Upscaling is a feature that can be used to enable content recorded at SD resolution (NTSC: 480p / 480i, PAL: 576p / 576i) to be displayed in HD resolution (1080p / 1080i / 720p). Because the video content of commercial DVDs is recorded in SD resolution, higher resolution video can be achieved by enabling upscaled output.
Off Set to disable upscaled output.
Double Scale* Set to upscale and display with double horizontal and vertical dimensions without changing the proportions.
Normal Set to upscale and display at a size that matches the screen size.
Full Screen Set to upscale and display at full screen by changing proportions and stretching the image

    * This option can be used only when the video output setting of the PS3™ system is set to 1080p or 1080i.
    Hints

    * To use this feature, a TV that is compatible with HD input and output must be connected using an HDMI or component AV cable. Also, the video output setting of the PS3™ system must be set to 1080p, 1080i, or 720p.
    * When playing copyright-protected DVD content such as commercially available DVD-Video, an HDMI cable is required to upscale the video content.
    * If image quality is reduced or the image does not look right when upscaled, set this option to [Off].

It upscales them quite nicely it must be said.

I can't say I've noticed any difference with the upscaling as opposed to using a stand alone DVD player that's output through component.
I must be doing something wrong. Aren't some if not all HDTV's supposed to have upscaling built into them?

Since system version 1.80 the PS3 has DVD upscaling to HD resolutions.

Don't expect much though... it is still a DVD not a Blu-Ray. With techniques like anti-aliasing etc it will be a bit more pleasantly displayed on your "HD TV".

Upscaled DVD output on PS3 is excellent,

Looks amazing on a good TV.

There is definetly a difference ,ps3 does a much smoother job of displaying dvds.
Plus you've got it connected by HDMI ,so it's going to look better regardless of upscaling. Sound also is better.

Most TVs dont have decent upscaling and im guessing the PS3 upscaling would be substantially better so this is a cool feature :)

have a Sony Bravia (40+ inch) and have watched LotR's DVDs on it upscaled and have to say its hard to tell the difference between them and 300 on Blueray (which is awesome too btw).

    DeV.
