Whelan's Pub

Was having a bite to eat up on Wexford street last night, and dropped into Whelan's for a pint afterwards, only to find that they have gutted the place and added a big extension, totally devoid of any character, through the door where the stairs up to the jacks used to be. Not impressed! Nothing worse than having a good pub tampered with by some hungry fckers. I was only in there the other week saying what a quality pub it was.

Whoever's idea this was should be hung from the scaffolding outside the pub (in only their underpants), and pelted with rotten fruit by passers-by.

I know nothing about Whelans pub cause i've never been to it, just didn't want to leave you hanging with 0 replies.
I believe it's a pub with lots of music. A bit like the spirit store in Dundalk. I think they should stop serving food in it. Food in pubs is only ok in certain pubs.
I think some pubs should be food pubs, some should be music pubs and some should be pure drinking pubs with only a sh!tty jukebox for music and bacon fries or Tayto for grub.

I love Whelans, its one of my favourite pubs in Dublin. The place rocks on a Thursday night.

Whelans is great for the music and the banter, and the extension means that you can actually go there and not get knocked about the place whenever you go to the bar/toilet/smoking section. I think it's much better now.

What? The back part still has that ridiculously small staircase up to the bar. Unbelievable.

Oh, and I don't know how many times I've tried to speak to the bloke with the hat who is always sitting at that bar, the ignorant fecker never talks back.

Whelan's was our local from work for a few years a long time ago, but I haven't been there in ages. Had some rough nights (and even rougher mornings after) in that place.

Yob is short for yobbo - I didn't think anyone born after the 1950s used that one. A yobbo is an oafish loud-mouth, like groups of football fans.

I reckon the reason you stopped going to Whelan's is because you got barred for yob-like behaviour!

Nah, i was there one night and some guy threw a glass off the balconi and split this girl open on the dance floor.

And another time i was snogging my then girlfriend and this guy taps me on the shoulder and says "give her a break and let us cut in". Thats when i thought yop.

In fairness now i went to another country for awhile and thats prob the main reason i have nt been in ages, just have nt gotten round to going back.

Are you sure you're not mistaking that memory with a scene from Trainspotting??? It's sounds like it to me.;)

    That's actually really funny.

Whelans was a lot like Lansdowne Road. A complete dump that seemed to have been designed by a mental patient, but that was the charm of the place. Seems progress waits for no man or structure.

Are they keeping the statue of the guy leaning on the bar at least? :(

    For shame,

I used to live down the road from it. Very nice bar when it wasn't too packed. Even though the club was always jammed with top-man wearing trendy-studenty types I always liked it.
