    Or try moving to Latex.

Any OS X app can save to PDF. There's either an Export menu or it's in the print dialogue. As regards converting PDF to .doc, there are a few apps out there but it's a messy business. PDF was designed to preserve a document's final markup; in other words, to preserve the formatting when there was no need to edit it again. Because of that, it doesn't lend itself well to being converted to an editable format: formatting can get very messed up at times. Do a search for 'PDF to Word' on VersionTracker and it'll throw up a few apps that you might find interesting. Most of them are shareware or commercial though.

i would recomment Latex for any dissertations anyway - takes a bit of effort to learn but it looks so much better once finished.
