Wasnt there something about UK TVs not working in ROI (adapter needed?) or is this a thing of the past ?

Not an issue if you use Sky Digital or Digital Cable.

dont see how that would be I'm from the north and we have the same standard 3pin plugs of the south,

I think he is talking about how some tv's from the UK do not have a VHF tuner which is needed for analogue cable and some terrestrial services south of the border.

UK TV's only have a UHF Tuner, Years ago to watch analogue TV on a UK set You would need a Teleconverter which would convert UHF to VHF but like someone said already with Digital TV theres no longer a problem..

Wharfedale stuff is woeful crap though - nothing to do with the high end brand it was years ago someone just bought the brand name - I wouldn't touch it no matter how cheap it is.

    ...before you go to Newry:)

I clicked on the "What about?" tab and a 37" version of the same telly by Wharfedale is £200 dearer?!?! Looks to me like Argos have f00ked up their price listing.

If they haven't then I think it's well worth buying. Someone mentioned that they are no longer the same company, and cannot be trusted for their original level of quality. i checked Wikipedia and it stated "The name has been licensed to Argos for the manufacture of electronics products, who use it on digital terrestrial television adapters, headphones, television sets and other products. All Wharfedale-branded speakers are still made by the original firm."

If I read that right then that means that everything bar the speakers are built by Argos or one of its subsidiaries. That means its DVD players are built by the Argos group, and the one I bought SIX YEARS ago (not shouting LOL, just emphasising) is working perfectly with crisp picture and perfect NTSC playback of R1 discs!

Also, the Argos site states that the TV is compatible with irish cable signals (UHF/VHF) so if you plan to watch dirty analogue cable (for shame) there'll be no problem.

I think the exchange rate with the visa is 0.694858 GBP and I know delivery for a 32" tv is £33.99 so say £50 for a 47" one would make it less than €1000 delivered...

Hell of a lot more likely to go wrong with a cheap LCD TV than a cheap DVD player how much would you rather risk - 40 or 50 euros or 1000?
There is nothing on these TV's made by the Wharfedale Audio company including the speakers.

These TV's are built in Turkey by a completely different company, branded and sold to Argos with cheap substandard parts - I have a 21" CRT myself that I bought for my kitchen - cheap crappy plastic, terrible sound and bad picture quality but it was so cheap I got the 3 year extended warranty as well - but it's for my kitchen so it'll do - cheap TV's have their place but not when it comes to large screen LCD's or Plasmas imo.

Take note of this thread (from post 5 on) before you consider buying anything from musthave100, looks dodgy!

I meant the individual speakers sold under the Wharfedale brand, not the ones attached to the TV. please refer to Wikipedia if you've any other questions.

As for the €1000 "risk"---I worked in Dixons and saw many of the so-called "better brands" returned for faults. I don't place as high an emphasis on these brands as many other people do. Yes, Sony, Samsung and Pioneer would be the top three affordable, quality LCD manufacturers (not in that order) but for €1000 with a full one year warranty, there really is no risk IMO. If it acts up in the first year, just refer to the warranty, and get it fixed/get it replaced with a newer version. Sorted!:)

I checked this TV out in Argos in Liffey Valley on Sunday, the price at the moment is 960 Euros or so. The spec looks very good, comparable to other TVs of that size costing up to twice as much. The thing that concerned me was the contrast ratio, though, it's only 1500:1, whereas all the other TVs on the page in the catalog were around the 5000-6000:1 mark. Just wondering in real terms how much of a difference this would make.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,213 ✭✭✭ixtlan

    Contrast ratios are often misleading.

Dymamic ratios are achieved by dimming the backlight, which does not truely reflect whether the picture will be good or not.

1500:1 is actually respectable for a static ratio. The best Sonys have 1800:1, so 5000:1 has to be dynamic.

However I can't comment on the quality of this TV. If you are fussy I would beware, as it's bound to be disappointing in some ways.

    Ix

It seems very good in all other respects though, and the specs have it as full HD (1080p and 1920 x 1440 or whatever it is). Only thing is it's not much of a looker, but I could live with that. Thanks for the info though, I'll have to think a bit more about it.
