a survey of more than 3,000 people was conducted by LoveFilM.com. to find out who is the all time greatest movie gangster and here is the top 10:

1. Al Pacino as Tony Montana in Scarface (1983) - (18%)

2. Ray Liotta as Henry Hill in Goodfellas (13%)

3. Samuel L. Jackson as Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction (13%)

4. Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone in The Godfather (11%)

5. Ben Kingsley as Don Logan in Sexy Beast (6%)

6. Robert De Niro as Don Vito Corleone in The Godfather II (6%)

7. Vinnie Jones as Big Chris in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels(6%)

8. John Travolta as Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction(5%)

9. Bob Hoskins as Harold Shand in The Long Good Friday(3%)

10. Daniel Day Lewis as Bill 'The Butcher' Cutting in Gangs of New York(3%)

I wouldn't even class Tony Montana as a gangster. So that's punches a massive hole in the ''survey'' to begin with.

Joe Pesci in Goodfellas / Casino FTW!

An abbreviation which turned around spells WTF?!!? Which is a more apt reaction to Tommy from Goodfellas not getting number 1, let alone not being in the list  Ditto De Niros Jimmy Conway.

Nino Brown and Nicholson in The Departed would be worthy of a mention to.

No way is Tony Montana ahead of either of the Corleone Dons.

The reason in my opinion, that Montana was voted number one is because the film scarface is in many ways a bible to a lot of young men and woman who have dreams of becoming the next "Tony Montana" and think they can use it as a kind of guide on how to reach the top of the drug industry and its no coincidence that a lot of these people either partake in using cocaine or either selling cocaine.

So in many ways Tony Montana Is an idol and an inspirational figure to these people!

Thats my 2 cents in anyway:D

tony montana was originally "tony camonte" in the book scarface by armitage trail, he was the original gangster with the "now look shee" and flicking of the coin, so montana was based on the original gangster!

That list would be somewhat different to my list. I think it is ludicrous that Vito Corleone made the list twice, and Michael, who was the main character of both films, didn't make the list.

Another thing I don't like is when two characters from the same film make the grade. I'd prefer more of a spread. One doesn't really get to judge a public poll all that much though; it was from a decent sized sample, so who cares about my opinion?

T'was good to see Henry Hill finish nice and high though.

I'd put Tommy De Vito from Goodfellas at number one personally. I'd also have put Brick Top from Snatch in there too.

i may have agreed with you, but it's jules and vincent from pulp fiction so i have no complaints there, greatest movie ever, and those two kick ass!!

Its Tony Montana mang, it doesn't get more gangsta than that. The Corleones are well and good but at the end of the day, most of their dirty work was done by henchmen. Tony Montana did his work by himself.

Pesci and DeNero in Goodfellas and Pesci in Casino.
Ray Liotta's Character wasn't much of a gangster tbh!

+1 I'd say Pesci ahead of DeNiro though.

I too am shocked that Pesci isn't on the list, I watched Goodfellas again last night, classic classic film.

I think Sonny Corleone was a brilliant gangster
I was very pissed off when he got killed

I liked Tony Montana, but I wouldn't put him on top, and infact I would place Carlito Brigante ahead of him. Carlito's Way > Scarface

here's mine

ok ok, ignore my post! :p

let me direct my question so at those of you who have answered. What do you interpret the "greatest movie gangster ever" to mean?

I'd second those who have suggested Pesci, Jimmy Conway, and good aul Brick Top, but someone I am shocked the list, or this thread hasn't mentioned, is Pacino in Carlito's way, far far btter performence and gangster than Scarface. The 'sasso' scene is one of my all tie favourites.

So to get around a lot of this, I decided to worship the sun. But, as I said, I don't pray to the sun. You know who I pray to? Joe Pesci. Two reasons: First of all, I think he's a good actor, okay? To me, that counts. Second, he looks like a guy who can get things done. Joe Pesci doesn't **** around. In fact, Joe Pesci came through on a couple of things that God was having trouble with. For years I asked God to do something about my noisy neighbor with the barking dog, Joe Pesci straightened that cocksucker out with one visit. It's amazing what you can accomplish with a simple baseball bat. So I've been praying to Joe for about a year now. And I noticed something. I noticed that all the prayers I used to offer to God, and all the prayers I now offer to Joe Pesci, are being answered at about the same 50% rate. Half the time I get what I want, half the time I don't. Same as God, 50-50. Same as the four-leaf clover and the horseshoe, the wishing well and the rabbit's foot, same as the Mojo Man, same as the Voodoo Lady who tells you your fortune by squeezing the goat's testicles, it's all the same: 50-50. So just pick your superstition, sit back, make a wish, and enjoy yourself.

Aside from that, Henry Hill from Goodfellas ftw
