Foreigner Quotas

Don't see a thread on this anywhere at the moment? so what do people think of this?

Personally I think, if a quota came in it would do huge damage to the teams outside the top 5/6 teams in the prem. It would spark off huge buying up of english talent from the league by the bigger, richer teams leaving a bigger gap between the poorer clubs who now wouldn't be able to bring in sufficient talent due to over-expensive english players and the limited amount of cheap foreigners. This would probably take about 5-10 years for the league to recover.

Also what happens to all the players currently in the league, foreign clubs would be bidding ridiculous prices due to the fact they now clubs have to get rid of them, leaving clubs in a poor financial state.

Finally, I am pretty sure it would be in contravention of EU Labour Laws.

EDIT: England have progressed about the same in tournaments since 1970, and only in the last 17 years have the level of foreigners been a 'problem' - two quarter finals in the last two world cups, only being bettered by 1966 and 1990 (semis)

would be great for domestic football if foreign leagues like England restricted the amount of Irish that could play there.

would they? if they restricted the amount of non-English to 4 a squad like the Italians used to had, how many of the 80 odd allowed would be Irish?

Would be interesting to see if the Irish national side playing in Ireland would get the Ole Ole brigade off their barstools.

It'd ruin the big leagues. Great news for International football and for Sepp Bladder.

Doubt it isnt fabregas a uk citizen next year if he wanted to be?

Same as all south americans are spanish eventually to get by the max non eu player rule.

Dont think it would be great for international football either, our players go abroad to get better its the same for msot countries except maybe 4.

    It ain't going to happen.
No way would the EU ever allow this to go through. A French/German, etc player has as much to play Premier League football as an Englishman.

The work permit system they have in place for non-EU citizens works fine so no need to change

If this rule does somehow manage to happen, I'd imagine it will be based on what country you play for, so Fabregas would still be a foreigner.

That said, don't worry, the EU will never ever allow this to happen.

A quota could be placed on the squad, but not on the team.

It would be fine to say: You must have 10 English players in your squad.

They could never say: You must have X amount of English players in your matchday squad.

Reminds me of a piece I saw on television last year some time (MOTD2 perhaps) featuring Scandinavian Liverpool fans. They were complaining that there were too many foreigners coming into the (English) game.
If I were an English football supporter I'd certainly hold that view.
