Apologies if this has been answered before...
Just got a laser card with BOI. Play.com say they accept Maestro and Cirrus but having problems registering an account with them. Saying the card number is incorrect.
Anyone know what the issue is?

Laser cards cannot be used outside Ireland unless you are present at the tranaction point - similarly UK debit cards can't be used outside UK unless cardholder is present.

You could get a Kildare Village mastercard gift card. This is valid for a year and can be used on all sites and regular stores. - Doesn't carry stamp duty as its issued by Newcastle Building Society in UK - and it can be topped up.

So what you're saying is no matter what banks debit card is used, they don't work online?

Barclay's Visa debit card should work as it's validated through the Visa payment system. Laser cards don't usually work, though there are a few online retailers that do accept, but not many. cdwow.ie does (or used to anyway).

I'm presuming if that's the case that the Halifax Visa Debit Card would work online where Visa is accepted?

Some websites do accept laser cards now

www.cdwow.ie accepts laser cards and its generally cheaper than play.com

    I believe that's correct, yes.

Sometimes if you can select a Maestro debit card on a site your Laser card will work as Laser authenticates through Mastercard's Maestro service. This is rare though. Worked for me once before. Tried it on cdwow.com and was refused on the grounds that pound sterling couldn't be charged to that card.
