I use 20 oz boxing gloves with holding of gloves not allowed, this lets you start from standing and continue, though it is a groan in the clinch and with most ground stuff. We would train with these gloves to get experience in the kind of energy and intensity you get in full rules MMA.

Alternatively, if we are working more skill based drills I use the B class gloves, can't think of my own brand, Fairtex possibly, I got them off the Fight Lord guys at any rate. They are great gloves, you can give decent pressure in G'n'P without damage to your hands or your partners face, but not so padded you will be rattling his teeth either, forces you to keep a happy medium of pressure that will mean your partner won't be so inclined to eat shots at the end of a drill just cause he is tired :)

I suppose I should add the caveat in case it isn't clear enough form my post that you don't want ot be belting folks full on in G'n'P in training, not good for the mental faculties regardless how much padding you have. You can drill all the skills you need to learn to defend without striking full whack, similarily for learnign the g'n'p skill itself, you don't need to strike pull power to get better at it. Safety first folks!

You can always go old school, and go closed fist to the body and open hand to the head. :D

I've used these gloves a few times and they've been excellent and come highly recommended. As stated, padding has excellent shock absorbtion so you can go quite hard but they are compact enough that it doesnt affect your ability to grapple much at all.

We have used pretty much all the main brands and have settled with Sandee, extremly durable and reasonably priced for a high quility product
