Using Netopia 2247NWG modem on Smart?

    Hi,

I moved house recently and in my new place, Smart broadband has already been enabled. I'd like to use my Eircom Netopia 2247NWG modem, which I know is an ADSL2+ modem, instead of the existing Smart's Aolynk DR814. (The reason: the Netopia allows a wireless connection).

I've connected up the modem and while the DSL light for the 2247NWG indicates that it has connected successfully, I can't bring up any page on my laptop. I put the Aolynk back on and the pages come up no problem.

Would anyone have any ideas on what I may be doing wrong? I'm suspecting (through another thread) that it's because I need to change my username and password to that for my new provider (ie. Smart). Would this be a likely reason?

    TIA!

First read the FAQ sticky. There is a link there that will show the settings for using a different modem with Smart.

You'll also need to connect to the Netopia with a cable to do the initial setup. Wireless won't work straight away because of the security.

Actually the link in the FAQ for the modem setup isn't working anymore. Here it is.

D'oh - didn't read the FAQ :o I did a search first on the forum for Netopia and Smart but I was being a bit too specific, I guess! Will try them out and report how I got on, when I get a chance to do it.

    Cheers!

I've tried out the settings for Smart Telecom with my Eircom Netopia router but to no avail :( I got my user name and password and set it up as follows - I only set the information on the one page (configure -> connection):

    VPI: 8
    VCI: 35
    Bridging: Disabled
    Concurrent bridging: Disabled
    Username: 016xxxxxx
    Password: xxxxxxxx
    Static IP address: 0.0.0.0
    IP Gateway: 0.0.0.0
    Primary DNS Server: 84.203.254.34
    Secondary DNS Server: 84.203.255.34
    Connection Type: Always ON
    UPnP: checked
    IP Sec Passthrough: checked

I know my username and password are correct (called up support just to be sure). I don't know how to set the Security Protocol to PAP (if that's even necessary to simply connect) nor the Modulation Type.

Would anyone know by looking at the above if there's something obvious I'm doing wrong? Or are Eircom's modems made to only work with Eircom?
