A cover letter should be very specific to the company and role you are applying for - it should not be a generic document. Your CV should be as factual as possible, where as the cover letter allows you to talk yourself up a little more, and to tell the company how you can benefit their company. You want to focus on what you can do for them.

A well-written cover letter shows that you are serious about your job. It is important to write the cover letter in your own words. Always start your cover letter with an impressive opening that grabs attention immediately. Keep your letter short and simple. Give a brief description of your skills and work experience. Stress on what you can do for the company. Try to relate your skills to the skills and responsibilities defined in the job listing. Be confident but not pushy.
Finally, thank the employer and proofread your cover letter for errors

Some General Guidelines For Writing an Effective Cover Letter

Keep your letter to one page: Cover letters should not be more than one page and usually not more than 3-4 paragraphs.
Avoid using the word "I": For example, instead of saying "I have enclosed a copy of my CV" you can say "Enclosed you will find a copy of my CV".
Use action verbs and adjectives: When describing your skills and qualifications, use adjectives and action verbs to arouse interest.
Proofread, proofread, proofread : Check and check again for spelling errors. Don¹t depend on your Spell Check alone.

Have a look at the sticky about this.

The other suggestion I'd make is not to use a font that is out of place in that particular situation that would consequently make it difficult to read (see above post).

Keep your cover letter short and job specific. It should be tailored to address the particular job you are applying for. Focus on your strengths and accomplishments in a paragraph or two. Relate your previous work experience and training to the company’s requirements. If you just graduated and do not have a lot of work experience, relate your accomplishments, training, research, and/or class projects to the qualities the company is looking for. Make sure to keep the same format throughout the cover letter. Be sure to proofread your cover letter. It is also a good idea to have someone proofread for you.
