A little bit of advice please.Im will soon have to update my CV. The current one is about 7 years old and allot of new information will need to be added. I was wondering had the structure of a CV changed from the usual. This was the order of my old one.

    Name,address, DOB etc,

    Schools

Work, starting with most recent to oldest,

    Qualifications etc

    Refs.

    any advice would be great.

I would say you should put your Work details before your Education if its more recent & relevant.

Agreed, and I probably wouldn't even bother with schools if you have enough work experience. A few people don't bother with DOB anymore, but that seems to be a personal choice.

I only put "references available upon request" at the bottom. I don't want my referees being called until I know they are being called, and until a job offer is on the table.

For the overall layout, check out the tempates in MS Word. Some of them are actually quite good. I've been using the "professional resume" one for about 6 years and have received very positive feedback on it.

If your CV is about seven years old then I'm going to assume quite a bit of experience. In that case I'd suggest basic details, work experience, qualifications and third level education in that order.

Leaving referees available on request protects you from a awkward cold call to your boss and gives you a few lines of valuable extra space. I'm always conscious of fitting as much important information as possible into my two pages without it appearing cluttered.

Another point to note is that some employers seem to be increasingly forward about not wanting a DOB on a CV. Some feel that not knowing the date gives them extra protection against discrimination claims.
