We are heading to Val Thorens on Jan 12th. Booked the accomodation at www.homelidays.com. We booked about 6 weeks ago at this stage and places were booking up then. You might be able to find something is you're lucky. The cheapest transfer I could find, which worked out cheaper per person than renting a car, was here: http://www.mountainexpress.co.uk. Really nice and you pay nothing til you get there.

Sorry, btw, we're flying into Grenoble!

If you are a mixed group, consider Chamrousse. It's got a lot of easy skiing at one end of the resort, and some stiff blacks and an Olympic downhill at the other end. There's a youth hostel there which will stuff you with ungodly amounts of food.

We went there last April with our skiing children, and we all had a blast. Because we had kids, we mostly stayed in the hostel http://www.fuaj.org/fra/auberges/aj_fiche.php?aj_id=103 but were so busy drinking in the bar (cheap) that we never even got round to using the hostel's jacuzzi.

By the end of the week, even our six year old was skiing blacks.

You can get a local bus up the mountain for around 4 euro each.

you can easily get to les 2 alpes from grenoble airport, its the nearest major ski resort to grenoble. Cheap as chips transfer on the VFD bus. Their site is in french tho, so you might want to ring the tourist office.

you prob have enough people to hire a bus for yourselves though.
