This is awesome news. I'll be able to playback nearly all my video collection on PS3 when this arrives :D

    http://www.tradingmarkets.com/.site/news/Stock%20News/817096/
DivX, Inc. (NASDAQ:DIVX) today announced that DivX(R) video technology will be integrated into PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE). The popular computer entertainment system will be added to the ecosystem of devices that currently support DivX video playback. To date, over 100 million DivX Certified(R) products have been shipped into the market, and it is anticipated PS3 will significantly expand that number.

"We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3," said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, Inc. "Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format."

It'll be in the next firmware update I guess.

Threespeech have it too, they'll have an interview later: http://threespeech.com/blog/?p=718

excellent. though i knew this was coming, didn't know when they'd announce it. good news for all.

i wonder though, if divx are "working with sony", will they bring stage6 to PSN? and does it mean no divx for my 'lil 360?

    DIVX=Xvid.
Xvid is the open source version of divx and as such is completely compatible.
You ever buy a DIVX DVD player and ask why it plays all my xvid movies with no issues?

but if you were divx, selling your product to sony, it probably means sony paying license fee's for using the xvid logo if the case were such.

Hmm my PS3 may just be on the verge of making my desktop PC entirely redundant...

lol same thinkins here, going to sell my media centre in the sitting room to pay for a ps3 because of this announcement...

    divx + xvid + possible= HD playback

If the ps3 can play avi files of HD resolution, that would be insane...

    So with a ps3 you can play games,stream video,upscale dvds,play blu-ray discs,download movies from megashares and such...

Its looking like a bargain at €400 imo even if you dont game much...

Anyone knows if there is a mkv player coming out/out now to play hd video?

Well you can download stuff with the browser... and you could always default to Linux if you want torrenting and stuff :p

Nah I've a laptop for all my computing needs.

My desktop currently exists for exactly two reasons - Team Fortress 2 and playing movies through my HDTV. The PS3 will soon be able to do both.

Any sign of PS3 being able to record from TV? Last I heard, March was earmarked for that update?

On a USB peripheral being released for it. It'll be a digital free-to-air thingy.

Getting a PS3 soon, delighted with this divx announcement :)

Can you just plug the PS3 into a home network and access video/music via shared folders? Or do you need to setup some sort of Server app?

    Thanks

You can use a free program called TVersity to share your music, photo's and videos. It will share these for you and the PS3 will automatically pick up the share afterwards. It's got USB and memory card readers too (unless its the 40gb model) and you can use these too.

So a USB external HDD with music is viewable by the PS3?

If you update the fw to 2.0 it should be fine.
