Thought I'd build a wind turbine in the back yard.

    Very pretty :)

I was driving through Abbeyfeale on Sunday enroute The Kingdom, and noticed that there were a few additions to the landscape since I was last in the area.

    What's the local reaction? Pro/anti?

Generally fine to be honest, I dont mind them, however, 8 2.5mw units so close may change my mind.

I can see ober 70 turbines on a clear day.

Knockawarriga? If you dont mind the look of them there might be other things that could bug you after a while, once they start turning:

Noise: From the photos it looks like the houses are probably beyond the critical noise level (38dB I think). But having said that, I think you'll still hear them, particularly if you're to the north-east of the site.

Electromagnetic interference: The good people of Kingarvan discovered that they could no longer watch analog TV once the wind farm near them went live. The developers (same company as your new neighbours I think) eventually addressed the issue by installing additional equipment for boosting the TV signal.

Shadow flicker: Doesn't bother some people, but if it gets under your skin it could drive you nuts -literally. Check if the sun passes behind the swept areas of the turbines at any stage of the year, when viewed from your house.

The planning process should have addressed these issues- but it's failed others in the past!

    Just about finished it.

Look at the trees at the base for scale.

    Think I'll build 8 more.

The site gave me a 'service unavailable' message - not very encouraging!

link is fine so please dont post a comment like this, after all many sites do maintenance over the weekend.

Proobably not ideal for back garden use.
The idea of Maglev wind generators is very cool. The press release seems to break the laws of thermodynamics but other then that it is a promising idea.

*just as a back of the envelope if you look at the wind map of Ireland today http://www.weatherweb.net/irewindgrid.htm
and that these generators create power in 3km/hr winds that means in todays very light breeze a maglev generator could be creating power.
