Printers keep defaulting to Letter

I have a client (UK) who is having trouble printing due, I believe, to the fact that his default paper size keeps resetting itself to Letter. His regional settings are in UK English and his has reinstalled the printer twice. Thinking it might be something dodgy with the printer, he installed instead a printer he had been usign with no problems at another location. This one also defaults to Letter...
An ideas what might be causing this?

Check the default paper size in whatever app he's printing from? e.g MS Word can be Letter and can override whatever is set on the printer

Is it a network printer with the print queue on some other pc/server? Had this issue before where the machine with the queue on it had its driver set to letter.

No network and the program he's using is set to print in A4 format.
    Mystery...

Check printing preferences in Printers and Faxes.

Might need to be set in a few places.

Right click on Printer> Properties > Device Settings Tab
Set any Trays to A4, which should make programs realise that A4 is available.

    Right click on Printer>Printing Preferences>
Click the advanced button and choose A4.

    Check your REGIONAL SETTINGS!!!
if USA it tends to make Letter the default
Ireland or UK makes A4 the default.

One of the commonest configuration problems.

Does AltGr 4 give a € (Euro Symbol)? Though strictly that is keyboard layout rather than Regional Settings and £ # " @ tend to be messed up too.

What software is causing the problem? Does it print letter size when using every app or just the one app?

Click APPLY after selecting A4. ;)
