One of the fastest growing cities in Europe.
but anyone who has used Schonfeld will have noticed, its a bit basic and small to say the least.
So to accomodate the planned extra traffic they have decided to just build a new one.
State of the art.intercity and suburban train station in the terminal.Loads of space built into the plans just in case they need to expand.
Motorway rerouted (6 lanes) to service the airport with its own exit
Runway capable of taking the new airbus etc etc.
Looks like the airport authority have funded the project themselves also.

Just to clarify things - I know it's implied by the OP - Schoenefeld and the "new" airport are one and the same:

I think the project basically involves a parallel runway and a new (entirely new, not additional like Dublin T2) terminal area, plus the ground transport links. (http://www.berlin-airport.de/EN/BBI/FlughafenDerZukunft/DasIstBBI/index.html)
(No offence to anyone; however, the project often gets reported outside Germany as though it were a complete greenfield airport, and this is actually what I thought when I first heard of it 5 or 6 years ago. It's still a major achievement.)

Eh? It'll be a pretty impressive airport, but Dublin has a second terminal opening by 2009 which will make our airport (30M pax/y) bigger than theirs (22-25M), as well as give passengers the option of avoiding our existing crap T1 (indeed, when T2 opens, the pressure will be on T1 to raise its game.) Ours already has motorway access, and it'll have metro access when Metro North is complete. Ours still has lots of room to expand, with another runway on the way and already talk of (and room for) Terminal 3.

Don't bash DUB for no reason!

yeah when i was in schoenefeld last year, felt more like a big towns airport, than a European capital. Dublin airport handles over 5 times the population of the state! to put that into context if Schonefled did the same it would handle over 400 million pax!!! But thats kinda like comparing apples with oranges.we already are at the capacity that redeveloped Schoenefeld airport will open at in 2012 and knowing the Germans, that 22-25 million wont be filled for a fair while after opening. When the new runway opens at Dub it the aiport will allegedly be able to handle 60 million pax! also the council are going to have to revise their policy of a max of 35 million pax per annum at Dub, because its going to be a hell of a lot more controversial to build another airport or lose flights to Belfast or the UK...

It's very similar to Munich by the looks of it. Look at the expandable nature of the design folks. It's built to expand in a planned manner, not as an organic ad-hoc mixture of terminals like so many airports, including Dublin.

I just wonder will it ever need so much capacity as oil becomes steadily more expensive and Europe continues to roll out TGV/ICE/AVE/Thalys etc. who will be flying from BBI?

indeed, when T2 opens, the pressure will be on T1 to raise its game

See below plans for T1. It should be noted though that Berlin has about 50 airports serving it.

I make it 3 officially (Tegel, Tempelhof, Schoenefeld), 2 paractically (Tegel, Schoenefeld) and when BBI opens, Tegel closes (maybe not) and the Schoenefeld name fades forever it will be just one. Or do you mean 50 routes (that can't be right)?
