Came home from work and there it was, dead.
Tried different power source but to no avail.
It has a US power source cos I bought it on Ebay and it came from HK

Would it have died cos it was plugged into the phone socket on the wall and eircom (which are still months away from putting a line in the house) did something that killed it ?

I would say that probably yes, they do recommend that if you are going to plug to the phone line make sure that the line is disconnected (by the wires coming to the house not the telecom switch) even if you don't have an active phone line Eircom might have done something and send a signal to your house that cause the problem.

    Regards

Maybe the US power source was the problem? US has 120V 60Hz, we have 230V 50Hz. Was the power supply rated for 230V? Depending on the type of PSU it could have been putting nearly twice the recommended voltage into the linksys if it was a 120V only type. Although it probably would get very hot and burn out fairly quickly. How long was it working before it died? I'm assuming you're located in Ireland.......

Actually it was the power source.
I got one of those variable DC adapters and it is now working again.
I also made sure eircom are totally disconnected from the phone extensions
