Howdy folks. Having the same problem with my mbp that i did with my g4 powerbook regarding x11.

Tried installing X11 using the download from apple, but it says that i have newer software on my harddrive so it won't let me do it.

I'm trying to run GIMP and i need the X11 thingies to do so.

    Btw., I'm running OSX10.4.10
    any help or advice appreciated.

I installed X11 a few weeks ago onto my imac no problem.

I inserted one of mac osx install disc's ( 1 or 2 , i cannot remember, but x11 was on one of them) when i inserted the disc into the computer i saw and ticked x11 and bob's your uncle then after that.

Silly question, are you sure it's not already installed ? Check in the Applications/Utilities folder.

Another option is Fink which is at http://www.finkproject.org.

iirc it gets popped onto the root of your hard drive, "Macintosh HD" or whatever you call it.

It doesn't work well if you download it off the apple website as far as I remember.

I installed it off the disc I got with the macbook. There's 2 options though... if you install the correct one it should go into utilities.

This is what I found on the Apple Developer site:

    X11 Installation and Execution

X11 is available as an optional install on the Mac OS X v10.3 Panther, and Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger install disks. Run the Installer, select the X11 option, and follow the instructions. You should install the X11 SDK as well, which is included on the Panther Developer CD. If you intend to download X11 source code and build your own binaries, you will need the tools and headers included in the SDK.

If you have Mac OS X Server, you first need to download the X11User.pkg. Look for the Download X11 button near the bottom of the content area on this page. This download requires you to login using your Apple ID; if you do not already have one, you can register at this time. After downloading, double-click the package icon to install. You also need to install the X11 SDK in order to build X11 applications.

The Installer puts X11.app into /Applications/Utilities. Simply double-click to launch. Congratulations! You now have an X11 environment running on your Macintosh.

tywy is right. What you have downloaded from the Apple website (or any other legal download site) is actually an update to existing X11 binaries.

Try installing them first from the OS X installation disk as described above, then you can install what you have downloaded - as a update.
