    Hey All

Fired a bow for the first time a few months ago (I managed to completely avoid skinning my inner arm so clearly I'm a natural :D) and quite enjoyed the experience. Its got me thinking about taking up some form of archery but being a complete novice on the subject I was hoping somebody here would be able to give me a quick run down of the most commonly practiced disciplines?
Apologies if this has been covered numerous times in the past

    Cheers N.O.I.P.

Hi there, always good to get more people into the sport!

Where are you from? The best (and only) way to really get into archery is to join a club, there are quite a few around the country - ya can see details at www.archery.ie

The short short summery of the types of archery that we do in Ireland is like this .........

Indoors, there is really only one - called a FITA18. This means we shoot 120 arrows at a 40cm target from 18 meters. There is also a FITA25 (60cm target at 25 meters), but I've never seen one of these in Ireland.

Outdoors is a bit more varied. The main one is a FITA round - this involves 4 rounds of 36 arrows shot at decreasing distances (90m, 70m, 50m and 30m for lads / 70m, 60m, 50m, and 30m for ladies). Usually shot as a Double FITA - meaning we shoot one on a Sat and again on Sunday. An Olympic round is similar, but all shot at 70m.

There is also the discpline of Field Archery. This involves running (walking, crawling sometimes!) around a forest or mountain and shooting at targets of unknown or known distances - uphill / downhill / over-the-shoulder - anything goes really!

Generally, there is a shoot of some description on at least every 2 weekends somewhere in the country, so theres plenty of choice!

You would see Recurve bows, compound bows, Barebows (recurve without sights, stabilisers or toys) and sometimes Longbow at these events.

    Cheers for the info panser.

Luckily I'm already a member of a club that has an archery range (it's not a dedicated archery club hence my posting here). FITA18 seems to be the closet discipline to what we shoot, although admittedly its over a shorter distance so I'll probably focus primarily on it. That said field Archery sounds really interesting I'll have to hit google and see what I can see.

    Thanks again

Its actually a reference to both the Irish Airsoft Association (IAA since I'm an airsofter) and the A-Team (because its the greatest show of all time :D) the red letters are just supposed to mimic the red decal on the A-Team van.

Apparently it drove a couple of people mad on the airsoft forum trying to figure out what the anagram was.
The explanation kinda ruins the mystique :D

Check out this thread - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055146414

I try to keep it up to date with Irish field archery stuff. When on the www looking up field archery, be aware that there are 2 (well, 3 kinda) disiplines. There is FITA Field Archery Style, IFAF Style (both have different rules and distances, both are similar) and 3D style (shooting at foam animals).
