two major votes for 'being there', i haven't heard it tbh.. i have a couple of wilco albums alright but they were never one of my fav bands i have to say, tho' they have some truly great songs..
i think sweetie it's silver jews, is that right?..
i discovered a lot of music through 'uncut'.. they still do new stuff the odd time, got into band of horses through one of their CDs in the summer for example.. but they don't seem to really seek out new stuff as much these days

Grant Lee Buffalo belongs on that list IMO - particularly the first album, Fuzzy.

Bright Eyes is well worth a try as well but for some reason alot of Alt-country fans don't respect him because little girls go to his gigs because he is soooooooooooooo cute

Jason Molina (Songs Ohio) is playing in crawdaddy on the 20th. It will be great

It isnt Americana per se, but an album you may all like is 'Black Ships Ate The Sky' by Current 93.

The reason I flag it up is because it has contributions from Bonnie Prince Billie and a host of others giving it that real hoary, sad acoustic feel. Im a long time fan of C93 and it's the most mature album David Tibet has done - it will appeal to plenty.

current 93, cheers 4that.. must look it up.. sounds great
yeh jason molina is someone i need to explore, i like the stuff i've heard by him..
can't believe i forgot gram parsons on the original list, GP/Grevious Angel..

C93 have a long, full history of eccentric UK psych-folk, and its a many headed beast. But the new album (Black Ships) really does come close to much of the interests in the topic.

"All The Pretty Little Horses" remains their masterpiece - and Nick Cave sings on that one too.

Any love for Richmond Fontaine? Neko Case? The Walkabouts? All essential 'Americana' artists.
I'm disappointed that Neko Case isn't playing with The New Pornographers in Dublin this week.

I've rediscovered 'Chore of Enchantment' by Giant Sand. A great album. Also worth checking out is 'Sno Angel Like You' by Howe Gelb.

yeah i've heard r. fontaine, and i like what they do but there's something about them i just don't get.. dunno why.. i've never really heard neko but have heard lots about her.. and the walkabouts, i really need to get an album or 2, any song i've heard i like and i don't want them to have passed me by.. thanks for the reminder..

Totally agree with the above recommendation. Not going to be everyone's cup of tea but if you do get into Current 93, it is a very rewarding musical experience.

I also highly recommend The Angels of Light. Not quite Americana but they're kind of like a very psychedelic, sometimes aggressive country band. Any of their albums are masterpieces, take your pick.

    Drive-By Truckers worth a listen...

Sheesh, dunno how I forgot Michael Gira. Angels Of Light's "How I Loved You" is amazing, and word is the new one is smashing too. He definitely picked the olde Americana route a while back and its certainly paying off.

Also from his record label and highly recommended is Mi & L'au. It would be hard to get any more minimalist - the simplest acoustic guitar with two very haunting voices. Recorded in a log cabin in Finland, and sounds just like it. Though its not typically American, they criss crossed the US writing material, and it has had an influence of sorts. We played with them in Belfast - you could have heard a pin drop. I think Vetiver did a show with them in Dubland.

A mate gave me the Willard Grant Conspiracy album a while back... tried to like it, but I just couldnt get into it at all for some reason.

I have that album but I've only listened to it a couple of times, didn't really get into it but when it came out I was in a real heavy music mood. Must give it another spin.
