    Hi Guys,

Seen a few threads on here about data recovery programs, and i cant find it now :(

Basicially what happend, is one of the clients knocked over a pc, and seems to have farked the hard drive. Have taken it out, put it on slave on another machine. Did the error check ( took 8 hours.... ) And i can see the drive as d: on the second pc, but always get errors when trying to access any of the data.

Anyone happen to know a free program to try out before i send it away for professional help?

I also dont have the time to grab a live cd to try.

Don't know of any free software but it might be wise too invest in buying some, you would make your money back on one customer if you were successful in getting their data back, if you were unsuccessful you would have the software to use on future clients.
The professionals some times just run a scan over the HD with software and if the scan results in the data being salvaged they don't need to do anymore work, still charge the customer a heavy fee.

Ontrack software is good and has worked for me in the past.

Agreed. Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional has saved my (and some clients') bacon a few times.

ddrescue. I know you said you don't have time to get a linux livecd, but puppylinux or DSL or anything small like that should have it. It's top notch. Attempts multiple reads of damaged sectors, but moves on to retrieve as much data as possible from good ones before retrying them at the end. It's an amazing piece of kit.

Note: Not dd_rescue, which is older and crapper, but probably still great. I think it just stalls on damaged ones mid-try, whereas ddrescue marks them for retry at the end.
