so its the "old version" but i dont care

    pros so far

    -its sexy
    -its new
-the mac address was easy to find
-safari is like firefox so i dont have much trouble using it although i will download firefox asap
-leapord wasnt automatically installed so i can wait for the manufactrers of my dj gear to bring out leapord drivers before risking installing it
-the mail aplication was real easy to set up with gmail

    cons
    -msn for mac is ****
-cant set up the mail for my college email but i think i had this problem with my pc aswell
-quicktime dosnt seem to play avis, gom player dosnt have a mac version and i never really liked vlc but it looks like thats what its gotta be
-my full 250gb hard drive is not fat32 formatted so its gonna be a painstaking copy and paste and reformat process

    questions;

-is there a good free rar extracter for mac?
-what programme do i pick to run .exes as it pops up no default programmes is selected to run this blah blah blah
-is office for mac worth it considering im in college?
-i there a walkthrough anywhere on how i can set up a seperate user profile that ONLY has and runs my dj software on it?

    thanks in advance

    msn for mac is ****
    Try Adium.
what programme do i pick to run .exes
exes are Windows binaries and won't run on a Mac.

1 - It's out there, just can't for the life of me remember it Sorry!

2 - Mac's don't run .exe files, you need Mac Native Apps!

3 - No, it's not. Google NeoOffice and you're laughing.

4 - If you don't mind me asking, why do you want to do this?

well the same way id have only the necessary process's running in windows when im djing i want to do that on the mac if its possible

basically so that every available bit of juice will be focused on getting the music app to run perfectly as a dropout or a stutter in a big club is a bit ****

    Makes sense.

Only way I can think is to set up a new user, then go through all your prefs removing the shiny graphics etc. That'd minimise your memory usage a fair whack. But AFAIK apps are stored centrally and shared with every user, so unless you partitioned the drive or something.

I'm well open to correction on that though.

Oh, and I gather from your sig you're in NUIG or GMIT. If you want your college email to work, I think you can get the CompSoc in NUIG to get you an IMAP account. If you're in GMIT, it should work out of the box. Best bet is to ask Computer Services..

In order for quicktime to play .avi files, you need to download Perian which has the codec to play .avi files. Alternatively, you could download Nice Player. T'is really..em...nice and it's easy to use. It's what I use anyway.

UnrarX is what you are looking for to UnRar files.

+1 Support for NeoOffice. It's very good.

If you really need windows apps Leopard comes with BootCamp which lets you install Windows and you can then choose to boot into either operating system at startup. If you want to run Windows apps within OS X then Parallels or VMware have excellent programs that run Windows on top of Mac OS, the integration virtually invisible, you can drag and drop between each OS and launch .exe apps from the dock. But search online, there are tonnes of great free mac shareware utilities out there.

There are several RAR expanders, Stuffit Deluxe opens most formats, search version tracker OS X: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/25535

    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/audio/

There are also many dvix codec plugins available for Quicktime, Googles er man. VLC is a great free media player, plays tonnes of fromats and avi: http://www.videolan.org/

Flip4mac is a plugin for Quicktime that plays most Windows media.

Nice Player is a very good alternative. I was a fan of VLC but I quickly converted. It's just alot nicer to use...

    thanks for all lads

i got vlc, adium and neoffice,

    vlc is what i expected

cant get adium to work keeps saying there is a connection error with msn but im fairly sure i have the proxies set up correctly

iv a project to do tonight so ill let you know how i fair with neoffice

are there any FREE widgets that allow you to send sms from your desktop using meteor texts from your number??(that would be hot)

also im now using firefox and thunderbird, iv also used ff and i wana see what thunderbird is like so far im liking it

ill be hooking up my dj gear tomorrow probably (have it all installed just need to sort out my external hard drive so i have music to play) so hopefully that will run as smoothly as i have to have a mix done by thursday afternoon

    heres hoping

edit; also on the new macbooks tech spec page it says it can take up to 4gb of ram? is this true for the last version of mackbooks as i was under the impression 2gb was the max?

Adium works with MSN but has problems with my college proxy (works fine from home) - what college are you in?

There is a widget for texts but I can't remember the name of it and it doesn't work with Meteor yet anyway. In the meantime, try JSMS, it's a lightweight app rather than a widget but does the same thing.

I recommend the new version of Safari (version 3 - it's a beta but works very well) over Firefox on the Mac. Firefox doesn't integrate very well with OS X. It probably won't bother you at the start but as you grow more accustomed to the Mac way of doing things it'll bug you. Alternatively, you could try Camino. Version 3 of Firefox, currently due early next year, will integrate better.

NeoOffice does the job and is free, but it's also slow and cumbersome. I used it for a while but in the end I bought iWork and I'm very happy I did. I still keep NeoOffice on the system for compatibility with MS Office (iWork is compatible but occasionally does funny things to Office documents).

3 GB was the max. RAM on the last generation MacBooks. I think 2 GB were officially supported, but 3 GB ran fine, although because you had to use a 1 GB stick and a 2 GB stick (mismatched pairs) you didn't get the absolute maximum benefit out of them.

What makes it so hard to transfer files?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 308 ✭✭Oirthir

As Breezer mentioned, It's more likely that MSN can't get through the firewall in UL. I've been using Adium hiccup free for almost 6 months now. It's a godsend.

As for using Thunderbird, I'd recommend it wholeheartedly for Windows, but I think Mail for OS X is the best proggie out there. If it ain't broke etc ;)

    How long delivery take?

I am ordering a Macbook next monday and am wondering how long I should expect.

    2 weeks

the mac osx installer for that sms app aint working any ideas or is there a walkthrough?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,230 ✭✭✭Breezer

Try the next most recent version, I just installed that no hassle. It'll probably be fixed in a couple of days; I know the developer was away travelling but these versions were all done in the last few days. I'll mail him now and let him know there's a problem.

I was a diehard Thunderbird user on Windows, Mail seems to be snappier on Mac, plus it integrates with Quicksilver. Thunderbird has an RSS extension though (Mail on Leopard has this too). It can also export emails (again via an extension I think), not sure if Leopard Mail has this, Tiger doesn't.

College networks don't like messenger clients. MSN for Mac works to a certain extent in UCD, Adium's a non-runner, the Windows MSN works perfectly. There's a whole thread about it over in the UCD forum. Talk to your IT people, hopefully they're better than ours (if they don't crash the system while performing an unnecessary upgrade, then delete their backup, leaving 22,000 students and staff with no access to online resources for a week during exams, they're better than ours) :p

My gf ordered her macbook on thursday and got it on monday. I'm guessing yours was custom? Oh and to use adium in college go into the settings(advanced I think) and select connect via http. Sorry I'm on the windows partition right now doing work and I can't check the exact pref pane you need to go to. But its in adium settings. Oh and go and get some nice skins on adium off the adium extras site. Once its customized to your liking you will never go back to msn.

My god all the questions in one thread, my head is spinning!

re adium connecting in UL - what building are you in? CSIS? You'll need to adjust your proxies, different setup to the MSN ciient.

i can get it working but its as if its the first time i opened it each time which is annoying

im in kilmurry but it wont work in the csis building or the library either wereas msn worked fine anywhere

iv set the proxy to the public ul one and the port to 8080 and ticked connect via http so i think thats all that needs to be done??

and i figure that having all the questions in one thread is better than flooding the forum with new threads with every little problem i have

It should just extract an uninstall app written in Java. You run this and it installs a folder called JSMS in your ~/Applications folder, which contains a bunch of files and a JSMS.jar, which is the programme. Unfortunately the app seems to have gotten a lot buggier than it used to be.* I've been in touch with the developer and he seems to be well aware of this and is working on fixing it ASAP. It really is a neat little app when it works so I wouldn't give up on it yet.

    * - Doesn't remember your login details
    - Tells you that you're not connected to the internet every time you try to send a message, yet the message delivers as normal
    - Mac installer for the most recent version messed up
    - Doesn't download your phonebook properly (on Meteor anyway)

EDIT: The installer for the new version now works. Still a lot of bugs though. Going to email him about this now. I really am disappointed, this app used to be so good. In fairness I think the developer was away travelling for a good while and only got back recently, I'm sure he'll get it fixed, he seems very enthusiastic.

EDIT 2: Try downloading version 3.0.5, mount the .dmg and just drag the JSMS folder to your ~/Applications folder. It's a lot less buggy (although it still seems to give the proxy message) :D

I used to be the lead developer on JSMS but a friend of mine has taken it over since I've gone traveling in August for 12 months. He doesn't have a Mac so I'm sure he would like if someone who has a mac to offer to do a basic test of each new release on OS X. Also he is new to looking at/editing my (fairly messy) code. Plus, since the Meteor/O2/Vodafone sites are constantly changing it will always be a cat & mouse game to keep JSMS working bug free so bugs will always be around. However, he is a very experienced developer and I'm sure most of these bugs will be ironed out soon enough...

I've been in touch with him already, I was wondering about him saying he didn't have a Mac though, I was getting him confused with you :p Anyway I've offered to test any new releases and I've been reporting bugs, but I can only do Meteor, and have limited time. So anyone else who wants to help with testing please contact the developer - it really is a promising piece of software and judging by this thread there's a lot of demand.
