Pigheads a genius and knows almost everything about everything. However when it comes to laptops its fair to say I'm a numpty.

Gonna get a laptop today, getting the feeling ordering from Dell seems to be the way to go. Anybody any ideas which beast of a machine to go for? Will be using it mainly for browsing, downloading filth and playing Football Manager. Cheers.

You can customise your machine online so mess around with the setup until you balance out the dosh you want to pay.

I got the missus a laptop from dell for about €500 in April.
Battery is $hite but other than that it's grand!
    Inspiron 1501

My battery for my Acer 5021 Wlmi lasts all of 21 minutes at best :( It's 2 years old and used to last maybe 1.5 hours at the start. Not sure what "cell" the battery is or how much difference this makes.

21 Minutes! What a load of pants.

Have picked out these two after a few minutes looking around. Was hoping for 2G's of RAM but don't think my budget allows for it. Are the 2 above machines much of a muchness?

I picked one up for my sister that had 2GBs of ram, 2Ghz turion processor and a 120GB hard drive so it could be possible for around €600. I've got class in a few minutes so I'll take a look for you later.

All right from a couple of quick googles FM 2008 is actually not as intensive graphics wise as I had first thought. Recommended graphics card is 64MB direct x 8.1. I'm pretty sure integrated graphics should cover this although you may want to ask over on the Football Manager forum first just to be on the safe side.

This laptop has a 2Ghz (tl60) turion x2 processor, 2GBs ram, 120GB (plenty of space for your filth, you naughty little boy) and an ati x1150 (this is the graphics card). I think the x1150 will handle FM 2008 but I'm not 100% so ask on the Football Manager forum and see what they say. If it doesn't then we'll work from there. That laptop is €519 (upgrade the battery to a 6 cell) excluding vat and delivery. That should work out at about €660 give or take. It's a little over budget but it does have 2GBs of ram which is recommended for Vista.

This has a 1.8Ghz (tk55) processor, 1GB ram, 120GB hard drive and an ati x1150. The processor is a little weaker than the one above which may be a problem as FM08 seems to be pretty processor intensive. Also since it has only 1GB ram you may want to choose XP over Vista. It's €369 (once again upgrade the battery to a 6 cell) excluding delivery and vat. That should put it at around €500 altogether.

I just checked the thread there and according to marco polo, the cheaper one will run it fine. Just remember that Vista will be a bit of a dog with only 1GB ram. I'd recommend going with XP (It's an option and costs nothing extra). Later, if you want, you can upgrade the ram yourself. It's piss easy to do.
