    Review:

WHY ARE YOU WEARING THAT STUPID MAN SUIT?

October 1988 and small town USA is about to witness the end of the world. It's home to Donnie Darko, a brilliant but troubled teenager, plagued by terrifying visions of which he alone holds the key to the meaning. With his class mate and soul mate Gretchen and a mysterious ex teacher, Grandma Death, he must unravel the strange occurrences infecting his school, his home and his life before a horrifying spectre known only as "Frank" can pull Donnie over the edge of his sanity. Now, with the Director's Cut, the full extent of Richard Kelly's fevered imagination is unleashed. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal (The Day After Tomorrow, The Good Girl), Holmes Osbourne (Windtalkers, Identity), Maggie Gyllenhaal (Mona Lisa Smile, Casa De Los Babys) and James Duvall (Go, Gone In 60 Seconds)

Good price.. bought it for a tenner in Golden Discs a few months back.

But it's a different cover.. it's this one:

The director's cut is inferior to the theatrical / original cut really.. un-necessary scenes added in and gone are some of the best music cues (Tears For Fears etc.). The commentary with Richard Kelly and Kevin Smith is worth the purchase alone!

PS - i'm reading Kevin Smith's new book right now - almost 500 pages of his blog posts on his website over the years. The guy can make the mundane very very interesting. Oh, and it's available in Virgin for €10. Worth a buy!

EDIT: Actually.. the one i bought is a 2 disc-er. The one above seems to be the vanilla edition - movie only!

This 4.99 one would probably be a better choice - more extra features plus the original cut is superior to the director's one :)
EDIT: and basquille mentioned it just before me but honestly the music cues in the director's cut are really far worse.

Great stuff, this will be my third time buying as I've scratched the first two to bits through over-use! :D

Yep, buy the original if you don't own it already. I own both the director's cut and the R1 edition of the original cut.

Yeah.. all the times i've seen the vanilla (or Prism) edition for so cheap around, i've been tempted to pick it up simply cos it's so cheap!

But 2 copies is (probably) enough for now..

Is the one you bought, the one in Virgin? Also, is it the virgin in Sligo?

Yeah the original one (i.e. the 4.99 version) is an excellent buy - especially since it has some of the best special features Ive ever come across - the easter eggs (including one helluva disturbing moment involving impaling) are worth the price alone.

Im glad I got the director's cut free in the Sunday Times a year or so ago :D So I have two copies too - the original DVD (which I have had since release day) and the free copy of the DC. I think that's enough Donnie for me.

Sorry.. when i mentioned Virgin in my post above, i meant Kevin Smith's new book is available in Virgin (in Sligo) for a €10.

I bought my R1 Donnie Darko off CDWOW for about €17 when it was first released. Simply due to word of mouth.. hadn't seen it but wasn't waiting for the cinema release or DVD. Region 1 was shipped to me on day of release! :D

And the Director's Cut i bought in Golden Discs in Stephen's Green Shopping Center last Summer i think...

I re-read your post and I don't know how the hell I came to the conclusion that virgin was selling the dvd for a tenner. Damn hangovers. :(

    No hassle.

If you're around the IT during the week, I can give you a lend of the Director's Cut if you want.

I was actually looking for the non director's cut (seeing as it's the better of the two) and I thought I had the director's cut. It turns out my version is the non director's cut, so it's all good. Thanks any ways man.
