I'm thinking of purchasing a Dreambox 7020Si with 160 GB Harddrive. What I want to know is, will it be possible to transfer data (movies etc) from my laptop onto the Dreambox harddrive.

The above will cost me €500+, is there any similar cheaper device with harddrive that will do the same job?

I have the 7020 with a 320GB Hard Drive. I'm not sure if its a good time to purchase as its not High Definition. Theres been a lot of talk about the DM8000 - which has been due to be put on the market for the last age - but no sign of it. However, even if they don't make a move soon, I'd guess that if they don't someone else will put out a competent alternative as the market is ready for it.
There is already a linux based hd box on the market (kathrein UFS 910 HD) but don't know too much about it and its not very well supported (at the moment at least).

Maybe the best option for you at the moment would be one of these. Can be used with your laptop and avail of your laptops hard drive. Its not a big investment and you could go back and buy a set top box when theres a few HD boxes on the market at a reasonable price?

There is only one Trial HD channel FTA.
Reel Multimedia also do three HD PVR systems.

Actually, just came across a solution that would be ideal. Apparently, theres a new box on the market that will run the same software as dreambox 500 - its similar to the dm500 (just doesnt have usb) and comes with a pricetag of £79!

With HD boxes on the way in, this is the ideal solution to tide over till then surely. Anyone got one or know anything more about them?

Might get one as a second box for upstairs.

Indeed we do Its the ideal solution for you. It would be madness to buy anything else in the run up to HD - in so far as there surely will be linux based HD boxes on the market in the very near future...
