http://www.mactivate.ie/ is your best bet. Unfortunately on the MBP upgrading it yourself voids the warranty. You would be better off buying one yourself though and letting them install it IF they allow this. Save you an awful lot of money.

It would be much cheaper to buy one and upgrade it yourself.

It would be easier to buy an external, portable 2.5" HDD -- Firewire 400/800 preferred. (both for transfer speeds, and because they don't take up 2 USB ports)

    Get an external drive
    150e will get you a portable WD - 250GB - http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=336854

Have you ever tried getting the hard drive out of a mac portable? It's a pain in the ass... I had to do it with an iBook once and there were 36 screws to remove.

The MacBook is the only one that it is easy with.

Replacing the hard drive in a MacBook Pro is not a job for someone without some experience of dismantling laptops. There are plenty of illustrated guides available on the web that do a great job of talking you through the process but at the end of the day it's down to the confidence in your abilities versus bricking a 2 grand laptop or at least scratching or damaging the casing i some way. Here are a few such guides, you decide :

    Extremetech Guide

    IFixIt Guide

What happens if you do it wrong !!

I had to replace my macbook hard drive last weekend.

I went to peats because a friend works there, but 80 or 90 euro for a 120gb Sata Hdd, 120-130euro for 160gb.

Wouldnt go near any offical Apple components(from apple store or otherwise). For instance, 300euro for 2gb of ram, 65euro for 2gb third party ram with same specs.

MACBOOK PRO HDD's are a lot harder to upgrade than MACBOOK ones.

An external wouldnt be any good in this case, I already have two externals. The reason Im upgrading it is because Im installing the entire Adobe design suite, as well as Windows on a separate partition, again with Adobe etc. So I need ALOT more space on my laptop drive.

I dont think I want to use Mactivate, we used to use them in an Apple Reseller I worked in, and I found them very unreliable, and unprofessional, also I want to be able to drop it in somewhere and collect a couple of hours later! Will they do it in Pc World, warranty isnt an issue its already out of warranty.

I could do it for you but if you want the OS installed or a backup done you'll need to leave it with me for 2 full days and I don't offer a guarantee. I do however have experience of taking Macs and other laptops apart on a regular basis. I'm based in Swords, Co Dublin. PM me if you're desperate !!:)

I'd rather remove screws myself than give from Apple monkey €60 for doing it for me. It's not that complicated.

i'm so glad i got a macbook, looking at some of them upgrade videos, i know i would do either of these two things...

    1. lose one/many screws.
    2. after fitting the new drive and closing up, forget to check that the drive is in place.

I'll do it for you as per Zener above if you like, I'm in Dalkey. Had my own Macbook Pro apart recently to change the LCD. Your job is childsplay compared to that !
Get yourself a little 2.5in SATA external case off ebay for the old hard drive - handy thing that for a tenner or so
