Airport/Netopia Wireless Question

Hi all - hopefully someone can tell me whether or not this is possible.

Ive Eircom Broadband in the house and use the supplied Netopia router. I also have an Apple Airport Extreme base station which I haven't used in a few years.

What I need to do is connect the Apple BS with the Netopia router wirelessly. I want to use the Apple BS as a relay station, but can this be done wirelessly or do I have to use an Ethernet cable to connect the two?

    Anyone any ideas?

in the configuration of the Airport Extreme BS there should be a drop-down menu allowing you to choose the "bridge" mode.

This should be all you need to select, without any more config (hopefully)

    Thanks for the reply.

The only option I see in the drop down menu in the WDS config are; Main base station, Relay base station and Remote base station.

Where would I find the "bridge" option?

I tried for weeks to get a new Airport Extreme working with a Netopia router wirelessly, getting help and advise from this board, Netopia tech support, Apple tech support, the IT guy at work. Couldn't get it to work!! Now have a set up where the AE is beside the netopia, with ethernet connection providing a better wireless solution to most of the house, particularly my son's macbook which has "n" wireless. It didn't, however resolve the black spot I had where I wanted to put my iMac - it was better than the netopia but signal strength varied wildly. Resolved this by spending more money on one of the ethernet through the electrical cables pair of devices.
However, I do think that what you want to do can be made to work, but you will need to be a very good techy or be able to get one round to your place to help.

Thanks Joe - I actually posted a similar thread here last year, and while Googling I came across your thread. The problem is that Mrs. Crosstownk has the option to work from home (which is great when the kids are sick), but for whatever reason her company have now put a ban on wireless. So I need to have the AEBS close to her laptop and connect it via ethernet cable. I'm thinking that an Airport Express will sort it out of I connect the AEBS to the Netopia with a CAT5 cable.

Thought about setting this up too. Don't need to though so I haven't.

Try this doc from page 42 on, http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/Designing_AirPort_Networks_Using_AirPort_Utility.pdf

Hope you have the latest utility or can update to it as all the screenshots are for it.

    Good luck.
