    If it's sunny, 1/400 sec at f/16.

It's the "sunny sixteen" rule: an approximately correct exposure will be obtained on a sunny day by using an aperture of f/16 and a shutter speed close to the reciprocal of the ISO speed of the film; for example, using ISO 200 film, an aperture of f/16 and a shutter speed of 1/200 second. The f-number may then be adjusted downwards for situations with lower light.

Could you bring another camera along with you, just to meter from?

I have a Lubitel. If you have an SLR, it'll work fine as a light meter. IIRC, it's better to underexpose slightly, too - especially if shooting slide. I should dig out my old Lubitel scans and upload them sometime.
