It's probably been done before, so don't say here we go again.

    1. What is the best guitar on the planet?
    2. Why is it the number one?
    3. How much does it retail for?
    4. Where is the cheapest place to buy it?

The last post similar to this on guitar amps got a savage response.
Hope this will get people exchanging views.

Don't forget to post a photo of it too.

Such a thing does not exist. It's all a matter of opinion.

Asking what's "Best" is problematic at, er, best. :p

Different guitars for different styles, there's no master of all really. Even when you're getting genre specific, there's a lot of exceptionally good guitars out there, so it could be very hard to pick a best there. Then you've got the individual player's tastes.

    Impossible to answer. :)

Not specific enough...there are many styles and many guitars that are right for those styles.

However, in my estimation, the best guitar in the world:
    a.) costs under 1000
    b.) plays like it's 3000
c.) has the kind of good looks where you wouldn't be embarrassed taking it to a metal gig or a country blues jam

In short, it's that guitar you pick up at the music store that feels like butter under your fingers and brings out your style perfectly - you know you have to have it, even if it means selling your Grandma down the river for a nominal fee. :)

edit: Dayamn! I guess great minds think alike while simultaneously posting, KH! :)

Ok, well not to be a complete downer on your thread, and actually post something close to an answer, and with pics.

I'd say one of the greatest playing, and one of the most versatile guitars available, would be an Ibanez J Custom:

    ^ Click for larger pic.

Basically, only made for the Japanese market, but my god are they incredible! Really some of the highest quality instruments you could ever hope to play, and some of the nicest tones I've ever gotten out of any guitar. Not too expensive either, you could land a brand new one for less than €2k, and it'd still play better than some of the more ridiculously priced instruments out there.

Can't go without mentioning the Ernie Ball Music Man. Here's a pic of my John Petrucci signiature model:

Every EBMM instrument I've played has been fantastic, but they can be very expensive. Considering players like Petrucci use these guitars, as well as Steve Lukather and Steve Morse, you know they need to be very versatile, and I can tell you they're some of the best playing guitars I've ever layed my hands on.

Ok, so might not be a solid "Best" but as the best I've played, it's as close as I'm going to give you. ;)

I'll have to agree with Karl on the J-custom, its a lovely lovely guitar ! Was lucky enough to pick one up of The Freeman for 850, which he got off Voodoo you could say the guitar has been around the block ;)

I need to get a camera...

    +1

My €200 LTD is lovely to play. My Eggle sounds nicer. My Ran is just fantastic in everything. It's like trying to compare music genres. It just can't be done.

That's a fantastic guitar, the thickest chunkiest neck on any RG ive ever owned, fantastic tone and sustain. The colour is really moody and sexy too, especially under low-light. I could never photo that guitar properly, this was about as close as i could capture the colour.

    Best guitar ever? This one!

It's bloody smart, the sound is excellent and it is just fun to have it all the time. I wish I had enough money to buy when I was buying a guitar. (I can have only one.)

Agreed, mine (6 string) was only $1000 and it's the best playing guitar i've ever had my hands on, now if only it was a hardtail.

    What's yours?

Mine's the 6 string, non-matching headstock, non-piezo, non-custom inlay, discontinued black sparkle (not as gay as it sounds;))

Basically the bog-standard model, picked it up 2nd hand in Austin about 3/4 years ago.
