How can I play videos (avis or dvds) stored on my external harddrive (or on my laptop) on my TV?

Depends on your tv and the connections it has ... alot of lcd tvs will have either a dvi or hdmi connection, and if your laptop has either of these it will connect to that. Some tvs just have a standard monitor connection which can also be used. After connecting right click on your desktop, select properties and enable the second monitor

I've been looking at these on eBay, they look pretty good. Lots of them there and you would need one to suit your hard disk size, 3.5 desktop and 2.5 laptop.

Take your hard disk from its current external enclosure and fit it into one like this, it will be a media player when connected to a TV and still an external hard disk when connected to a PC.

I havent tried this but I'm pretty sure this is how it works. Let me know how you get on.
