Accelerometers are usually used by better satnav systems to do "dead reckoning" when the GPS signal is lost. Maybe that's why Nokia put it in.

They're also useful for performance testing cars.

"Rotate Me" have already done that.
Its a self sign freeware app I believe (well it used to be anyway - used to use it reg on my N73 sans accelerometer of course). Don't have my N95 to test anymore unfortunately. See below for the link to the video.

Actually I've used the first incarnation of rotateme. It's a handly little app. I believe version 2 will be even handier with a hotkey for changing orientation and the ability to mark the app as a system one so it won't get shut down when the phone runs low on memory.

According to the site version 2 is due for release this month.
