DNS address in Router Network control panel

    Hi,

I'm just wondering if I change the DNS address in my router (BT Voyager) configuration page, eg from automatic to OpenDNS numbers, do I also have to enter the same numbers in the Network control panel on my Mac, or do one take precidence over the other?

Incidently, does the DNS number you use have any effect on the download connection speed as reported in the router stats?

    Thanks.

DNS is given to you by your ISP, I don't expect you can custom generate one without having access to their DNS generator matrix. I also wouldn't expect any greater speed. The only proactive things to be done about speed as far as I've ever heard, are maintenance and upgrades within your own computer... RAM upgrades, clearing the cache/TIF's/history, etc... at that point speed comes down to two final factors: switching speed of available hardware (like your router) and bandwidth, which is completely determined by the ISP and overall customer traffic.

Creating your own DNS won't affect speed (well it will stop your connection working actually) but putting in the BT DNS servers automatically has been known to stabilise connections. Put these in the DNS Servers section of your TCP/IP settings like in the image...

    TCP/IP Settings

    Preferred: 192.111.39.1
    Alternate: 192.111.39.4
