Renaming hardware

    Hi,
I have two DVD burners (both LG’s), one internal the other external. How can I rename them? When I use a burning package such as Nero and go to select a burner they come up as “HL-DT-ST DVDRAMGSA-4163B” and “HL-DT-ST DVDRAMGSA-E40N”. I would like to rename them, for example “DVD-RW 1” and “DVD-RW 2” or a simple name that will distinguish between them.
There’s no problem renaming them in “My computer”.
    Any suggestions?

I'm not sure but I think most burning programs identify the burners from reading a tag on their firmware so I don't think you can change it.

Totally open to correction but I often wondered about that too because I have four burners in my rig & sometimes using Nero it can be hard to distinguish which is which.

The way I know is that Nero happens to list them in the exact order that they are installed in the case (As in the first drive Nero lists happens to be the first drive topside of my case & it just continues down to the fourth)

It is possible to rename them, but as said above, nero will read from the frimware. Unless you are a "advanced" users i would not reccomend messing around with modifying the firmware. Otherwise you could risk fecking one of your drives. From what you have said above, it should be simple to decyper which driveis which. As they are named :

    Drive 1 > HL-DT-ST DVDRAMGSA-4163B

    Drive 2 > HL-DT-ST DVDRAMGSA-E40N

so from that it should be quite straight forward to see which is which, unless nero stops reporting after " HL-DT-ST DVDRAMGSA " If thats all it shows for each drive then you have a bit of a problem.
