there is a book coming out called "the Irish in Hollywood" or something like that very soon. The author was interviewed on the radio and i thought you might enjoy hearing some of things he was saying.

Apparantly the man who suggested and designed the hollywood sign was irish. He worked for an irish run/owned advertising agence.

The man who designed the oscar was from dublin. he apparantely won the oscar 11 times. (sorry didnt catch his name) he also created a sound recording that he later sold to disney which went on to become part of mickey mouse's voice!

a waterford man was a co founder of the studio which went on to become universal studios.

Gene Kelly had an irish passport.

anyone know of any other influences us paddies had in the movie business?

It was, Hollywood was the work of east european emigres who had a background in live entertainment and music. A few Paddies elbowed thier way in (as is thier wont!), the Hollywoodland sign was the idea of a so called Irish-American who ran an ad agency.

    Mike.

Metro, Goldwyn and Meyer used to run the cabbage, turnip and tomato stalls on Moore street before moving over to the US
