Can I set Firefox not to do an auto search if the wrong url is typed, as in IE?

Almost certainly. Try sticking about:config in the address bar and have a look through the results.

in the address bar type about:config and hit enter

in the filter bar input the two strings below

browser.fixup.alternate.enabled (and change this to disabled)

    keyword.enabled (change to disabled)
