OK, so Sky news have posted an article about the most popular movie lines / quotes and the list is as follows........

The top 10 movie lines we use the most

1 "I'll be back." (The Terminator)
2 "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." (Gone With The Wind)
3 "Beam me up, Scotty." (Star Trek)
4 "May the force be with you." (Star Wars)
5 "Life is like a box of chocolates." (Forrest Gump)
6 "You talking to me?" (Taxi Driver)
7 "Show me the money." (Jerry Maguire)
8 "Do you feel lucky, punk?" (Dirty Harry)
9 "Here's looking at you, kid." (Casablanca)
10 "Nobody puts Baby in the corner." (Dirty Dancing)

Dunno what some people were thinking of when they compiled this list (I mean, come on...Dirty Dancing?? )

The most glaring ommision for me is........"We're Gonna need a bigger boat" from Jaws.

Any other suggestions for classic quotes they missed?

Agreed that the Boat Quote should be there.

As well as "Heeeeeeeere's Johnny" from The Shining

'Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn' - I think many people use this without ever having seen the film.

I never heard anyone say 'Nobody puts baby in the corner' - it sounds peculiar, though not peculiar enough for me to rush out and rent 'Dirty Dancing'.

"I love the smell of the napalm in the morning." - Apocalypse now
"There is no spoon" - Matrix
"Call me b#tch and f#ck myself!" - South Park - Bigger, Longer, Uncut

    "It's over man, it's over" - Aliens

Well, if they're talking about the most famous lines in movie history, then the two most glaring ommissions are "Bond. James Bond." from all the Bond movies, and "Nobody's perfect" from Some Like it Hot. If the list refers to movie lines that have made it into the popular lexicaon, I can't see any reason why the Dirty Dancing line would be in there, but the others are more or less okay by me.

What I'd really want to see in there is "I want my father back you son of a b*tch!" from the Princess Bride. I'm currently reading a book by screenwriter William Goldman, where he talks extensively about writing the film, so I couldn't resist watching it again. That line sent chills down my spine.

3 "Beam me up, Scotty." (Star Trek)

I don't know if that has ever been said. I read an interview with Shatner a while back where he says the closest that was ever said was "Beam me up Mr. Scott."

A couple from Denzel in Training Day do it for me:
    "Oh you federally f*cked now!"
"I'm the Po-lice! I run $hit here, you just live here!"
"King Kong ain't got $hit on me!"

Probably a bit juvenile but there you go!

before the hungus locks this i wanna get me spoke in!

of all the lists that get generated for movies, most popular or best quotes always baffles me. what makes something popular or best when its comes to quotes? its only a quote! "Ill be back" or "you talking to me" hardly offers any inspiration or memorable anecdote.

I can understand best/fav monologues or best/fav scenes, but most popular quotes. give me a break!

I'm going to make the wild assumption that it's based on quotes that people use in real life. "I'll be back" is certainly one of them.

"mmmm, this IS a tasty burger" - one of many from Pulp Fiction.

The article says that the survey also asked men and women what film they would most like to be in. Now, men said James Bond and Star Wars apparently and women said "Pretty Woman" and "Dirty Dancing"........ Thing is.......... isn't Julia Roberts a prostitute in that film? :)

As Big B said, it was a list of commonly used film quotes. People here seem to just be quoting films. Of the ones on the list, I've used one or two but I usually paraphrase ("Frankly my dear, you can go f*ck yourself" being one I used today).

I'm surprised the Dirty Dancing one isn't higher on the list. Every girl I know uses it.

Not sure if it's applicable to this kind of list but very memorable all the same -

'I see dead people' - Sixth Sense

My personal favourite line in a movie - 'Andy Dufresne, crawled through a river of **** and came out clean the other side' And also liked 'Get busy living or get busy dying'- Shawshank Redemption (Morgan Freeman)

I don't care what your favourite movie quote is. The thread was for the discussion of movie lines and it'd be interesting to see more on that and why people think they struck such a chord.

If people keep just randomly flinging their own favourites (I mean qutoes from "Training Day" have little to do with the original topic) then I'll lock this thread as lists of such type are against the charter.

    Hmm.....

Some of my own favorites -

"Son of a bitch must pay!" - Big trouble in Little China. Said with feeling by Kurt Russell.

"You're gonna need a bigger boat." and "Smile, you son of a b****!" from a stressed out Roy Sceider in Jaws.

"How about a nice warm glass of SHUT THE HELL UP?!" - Ben Stiller in Happy
Gilmour showing his qualifications for Leas Cross nursing home.

"Heeeeeeers's Johnny!!!" - Mr Nicholson shows why he's Jack-of-all-tirades in Kubrick's The Shining.

"No, Luke. I.... am your father." - Darth Vader delivers the mother (or should that be father) of all plot twists with his characteristic asthmatic wheeze.

"PUT THAT COFFEE DOWN! Coffee is for closers only." - Alec Baldwin takesmotivational speaking to a new level in Glengarry Glen Ross.

"Have the courtesy not to hit the man until he's your husband, and entitled to hit you back!" - Barry Fitzgerald plays marriage guidance councilor in The Quiet Man.

"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here, this is the War Room!" -Peter Sellers on the niceties of nuclear conflict in Dr. Strangelove.

"I'm drowning here, and you're describing the water!" - Jack Nicholson describing why this is As Good as it Gets.

"I'm a Dapper Dan man!" - George Clooney talks hair in Oh Brother Where Art Thou'?

Probably just easier to lock it now. Maybe someone should start a stickied "List" thread where people can write lists of random words in...

Never used the Dirty Dancing "nobody put's Baby in a corner" one myself. But I have paraphrased the watermelon quote when I'm feeling embarrassed about something, eg: "that was a carrying-a-watermelon moment".
