Speed Camera at Tallaght

I was going north on the m50 last night around 9pm. I came on at the Tallaght slip and was keeping a few kilometres below the 60 kmph speed limit. There is a speed trap just after the on ramp. Bout 20-30 metres before I was on the road markings for the speed camera the light flashed but not towards the lines but out my direction ( I was not passed the camera).

There was noone near the road markings, and I was doing bout 55-57kmph, I just thought was bit weird it going off.

I was first in a small queue of traffic so just bit worried. Will contest all the way if I get a letter in the post

Anybody know of anything like this happening before??

    1. if you were not speeding then you have nothing to worry about because:
    2. if if flashed towards your face then there is no way for manual verification (i.e. no road markings) but:
    3. I drive past that camera every day and unless it was moved back to front after 7pm last night, there is no way for it to flash to its rear!
Did it flash twice? Could it have been the reflective strips just reflecting another cars lights?

Definitly flashed, not sure if it flashed twice, but definitly flashed.

I understand that it shouldnt flash to the rear but it seemed to do that which I found very odd to be honest. It definitly wasnt reflective strips, was an unmistakable powerful flash.

I know there is no road markings where i was when it flashed so its no problem, as well as I was doing under the speed so no big deal. Just was bit worried as I am getting a new premium soon and dont want it going up due to penalty points.

    Should be ok though

Well just to reassure you, I don't believe that points would be counted as the speed cannot be verified manually even if you were speeding.
Also for arguments sake, lets say that you were speeding, then it could be a few weeks before you receive notification of the offence and then once you return it there would be several weeks/months before you actually receive the points by which time you will be well into your next policy. Your insurer may stipulate it in your policy docs but mine does not say anything about notifying them about penalty points (or indeed other offences).

They can do either, depends on which way it's facing.

In the UK forward facing cameras (ie those that take a snap of the front of the vehicle) usually use in-road sensors while the rear facing ones use motion sensors & white lines on the road to verify speed using two images.

I don't use that bit of road so I don't know what type it is.

It's the camera that used to be on the M50 near the finglas turn off, going south.

There are white lines for the camera, or at least there were a few weeks ago.

The cameras on the M50 take photos of your rear bumper afaik.

Trust me. I pass the camera every day. There is nothing on the side facing drivers apart from some reflective stripes. The camera is facing the back of apssing cars.

All Irish fixed Gatsos are of the type that take pics of the rear of the car.
As for forward facing cameras, AFAIK for them to flash at oncoming traffic is illegal in the UK.

The lines are there for a manual check of the drivers speed (distance travelled between pic #1 and pic #2 in a set period of time)

Yes you are correct, thats why forward facing cameras use a different method of taking images, i.e. infra-red I believe.

But you could still get blinded by someone being flashed by a camera on the opposite side, I have been a couple of times.
