Wii games are over priced

wii games are overpriced, they are selling for the same price as new releases on xbox 360 and ps3. However the ps3 and xbox360 are a serious piece of kit and are sold at a loss, they hope to recoup the cost in games sales. The wii however is not as technologically advanced and would cost an awfull lot less to produce so whats with the high games prices. I don't have a wii myself, was just in a games store having a look around and thought the pricing was a bit odd.

Not really.. the Wii is still a relatively new console. New releases are expensive on any console.

But i have noticed a lot less Wii games on sale - but Virgin are doing 2 for €40 (or is it Buy 1, Get One Free) right now.

Aren't new PS3 and XBox360 games around the 65-70 euro mark?
I haven't paid more than 50-55 euro for a Wii release.

What makes you think that any less effort (or desire for profit) goes into a Wii game, than the other platforms? Surely, with a lesser platform the developers have to work harder to get the most out of the console..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,111 ✭✭✭MooseJam

yea they are doing a buy one get one free. I don't see the need for a wii game to be 60 yoyos, there is no reason a wii game should cost more than a pc game for instance

there's no less effort I'm sure but for 360 and ps3 games they are trying to recoup a loss on the sale of the console, thats not the case for the wii, it looks like blatant profiteering.

some games' pricing are really ripping off, like some games in HMV or GAME,costing 60euro or more!and god know why gamestop is selling 2nd hand wii game for just 5euro cheaper than brand new....

but i think most of us will take around 50euro to get a brand new wii game normally...

Just get them in Smyths... they usually have new releases for €50-€55, and then take 10% off that if you've got a reward card...

I was going to ask the same question! Can't remember the last Wii game I paid more than 45-50 euro for from a retail store. Get a loyalty card from Smyths and get them for 45 euro. And when you compare 45 euro Wii games to the price of games for the SNES 15 years (80 pounds for SF2T anyone) then it's amazing we're not paying over a hundred for each game by now lol

Last two games I bought for my consoles:

Call of Duty 4 on 360: €37.14 (And it's in the post!)

    Super Paper Mario: €40.99

Due to a lot of Xbox 360 games not having region protection, they generally work out cheaper than Wii games.

Shopping around is the main thing. You would be amazed at the price differences even between bricks and mortar shops.

I bought Forza 2 a few months ago in the Crescent shopping centre in Limerick. There is a Gamestop and a Virgin within 2 or 3 units of each other. It was €55 in Virgin and €70 in Gamestop!

Yeah, that was just mental altogether. I remember a lot of big games being £60 plus, mad money now and even crazier back then.

I was delighted when I picked up SF2T in it's limited edition tin for £30 a few months after release.

You need to shop around for Wii games... there is definitely a variance in pricing. Smyths and Gamestop seem to be the most competitive. Most games seem to be 50-ish...

must be just the shop I was looking in so, 60 euro for both wii and 360 games, I think I remember seeing some for 90 as well, it was Virgin dundrum by the way

Thats pretty funny, almost the exact same thing happened me in the exact same shops. I went into the Gamestop in the Crescent to buy Dragon Quest VIII the day it was released. I saw it was 59.99 and I though I'd walk down to Virgin and see if I could save a fiver. I ended up buying the game in Virgin for 29.99, I still think it must have been some sort of mistake on Virgins part but I wasn't complaining. It's something I won't forget and from now on I always shop around, it's surprising how much you can save.

They even made a screw up in my favour and gave me the limited edition of Forza 2, it was only the standard edition that was €55! :D

I don't get the argument that because nintendo are able to produce consoles at a profit, they shouldn't be allowed to make as much profit off games. It's like saying Sony or Microsoft should lower their prices because of all the money they make from selling Tv's or PC software.

Didn't think Wii games were too expensive, given what new releases on the PS2, DS and PSP cost I think they give excellent value for money, depending on the game, I would agree that spending 55 euro on another mini game collection is taking the michael however, but with something like Metroid 3 or Super Mario Galaxy its excellent value for money.

Argos has a limited selection, but some of what they have are really cheap.

I think Iread here somewhere that Nintendo won't allow shops to drop prices, keeping them artificially high, plus they have no "Platinum" or "classic" type range, from what i can see. Seems to to be the same for all the Nintendo consoles really. You see PSP games brand new for 20 yo-yos but you never see DS games for that, IMO anyway.

Maybe I'm a little sensitive this morning, but does that sound a little like trolling here? You don't have a Wii, and if the price of the games gets to you, maybe you shouldn't buy one. From looking around the games on the Wii are consistently cheaper than those on the PS3 / XBox 360 - usually to the order of €15 for the top games. Maybe that €15 is the extra profit Sony and Microsoft need to offset the losses on their consoles? There's a lot more hardware-wise in the other two, true, but like someone else said, no less effort goes into the Wii games. Maybe you should find someone who'll loan you a Wii and Metroid and Zelda and see what you think after a few weeks.

Nintendo had a "Classics" line for their other consoles, the sad reality of it was though that Sony sold hundreds of times more games for the PS1 and PS2, so these were far quicker and more numerously(*) sold than N64 or GC variants, thus reaching however many sales justified a budget re-release.

    * My word - hands off :)

If noone was buying games for my machine, I'd drop the prices too. There is way too much demand for DS and its games to even think about dropping the price! Super Mario DS is still retailing for full price and that was a release title!

And that game has more class the the vast majority of the PSP releases. And yes, I do own both consoles. One is played every day and the other is gathering dust for 12 months.

The E20 is for the platinum titles such as PES, so its hardly that they are not selling, seeing as they have to sell a certain volume before they get Platinum status. Games for playstation which you would think they would hold off on Platinum status, such as GT or MGS still get reduced after they hit the target, which baffles me.

Games are a blatant rip off nowadays and only a fool would buy more than 2 a month...as i am young(16)..i just got my wii modded for a bout 40 quid and now im playing mario galaxy a month before its even realeasd over here..i dont see how grown men cant be a little more economical and just get it chipped if they find it to expensive

It's the in thing now apparently, I seen fifa08 for 80/85 euro in game when released but apparently the 360 version has such a huge influx of extra content to justify a poxy football game that would look no worse on a sega dreamcast seeing as football games can only improve the ???? graphics wise ? What his real question is how can a console which is only slightly better than an original xbox be wiping the floor with the only 2 'REAL' next gen consoles. It pains him 'to see for whatever console he may or may not have' to seeing innovation pwn both of them in all 3 regions too.Innovation/Gameplay> shiny buttons always.

The only time something is overpriced is if no-one buys or uses it because THEY THINK it's too expensive - e.g. Dublin Port Tunnel, houses in Ireland right now. If Nintendo can sell games at 10000 euro a pop then they are not overpriced. A company's sole purpose, in fact it's LEGAL OBLIGATION is to make as much money as possible for it's shareholders. You have decided they are too expensive for you - fair enough then don't buy them.

Nowadays? what are you comparing this to?!! Super Nintendo games were £60 which as a direct conversion is €76.20 , not to mention money was worth more back then! (probably twice as much as today).

Ok so what if all the "grown men" mod there consoles, and no one is buying games, answer me this.... who would bother make them!!?? If you spent time and money making something would want to make some money out of it too.

I haven't paid more than €50 for a Wii game this year, maybe a couple them were €55/60when they came out at launch but the prices seem to have been lowered since. I don't need to own a wii to comment on the price of their games, if I was to buy any of the new consoles it would be a wii but the price of games is off putting.

Last two games I bought for my consoles:

Call of Duty 4 on 360: €37.14 (And it's in the post!)
COD4 for €37 wow, did you get lucky in a auction on ebay?

I intend to buy my first wii game since last x mass soon (and its not mario would you believe)
Guitar hero 3 actually, expect it to be expensive actually because of the guitar but not sure if i'll get it online due to high shipping costs (unless cdwow are selling it because their always free shipping), might have to get it in GAME as i have €10 on the card which i haven't used in 3 years.

Oh and mooseham that makes no sense, wii games are already a fair bit cheaper than 360/ps3 games in most places, so if you wont buy a wii because of the price of the games then you'll definetely wont be buying a ps3 or 360.
    Enjoy your ps2 I guess

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,317 ✭✭✭witnessmenow

What really annoys me about the wii is its misleading price. Grand yeah the console is much cheaper than its opposition's but take this for an example

Wii console - € 269 (if you can find it in a shop!)
    3 Extra Wii motes @45 each - € 135
    3 Extra nunchucks@24 each - € 72
    Total = € 476

    Playstation 3 40gb - €400
    3 extra controllers @ 50 each - € 150
    Total = € 550

Thats only €75 of a diffrence, and to be honest your hardly going to be using 4 controllers on ps3 while there is a few games on the wii that would use 4 (Mario Strikers and Mario Party do i think) . And the Ps3 is the most expensive option in the console market.

And i think nintendo are just being C U Next TuesdayS by limiting supply like they have been for wii's. I mean another Christmas shortage a year after the console comes out thats just plain nasty. If supply is "low" demand will go up and its working for them.

    [/end rant]
    :)

    EDIT:
BTW i do own a wii, and think multiplayer-wise its class, but i'm just pointing out it dont come cheap

Regarding DS games, it was no different with the GBA, but what I will say is that if you shopa round you will find loads of games at reasonable prices, for example Brain Training is ususally 34.99 as is Puzzle League.
I bought the excellent New York Times Crossword and Nervous Brickdown for around €20 each, Essential Sudoku was only 14.99 in Virgin, and that has 1000 sudoku puzzles and 1000 picross puzzles in it!
So there is lots of value to be had, but I would begrudge paying 40/50 blips for Zelda, would you?

My bad, typo, I mean't to say, "but I wouldn't begrudge paying 40/50 blips for Zelda, would you?".
Read my own post and thought, who is this nut???

But Mario Galaxy, Zelda, Metroid, these are games easily the equal of the best games on the PS3/360, in many cases surpassing the best efforts of those "next gen" machines.
