I have a Dell Dimension 5150, recently I added a new DVD-RW/CD-RW drive to my computer also keeping the orinigal DVD-R/CD-RW drive. Now it seems when I put a blank cd or a music cd its not working. No option comes up, I went into My computer and it doesn't show up on either drive. Blank and full DVD's work on the DVD-RW grand.

    Help please a.s.a.p.
    Gavin

I "think" After reading the post a couple of times... that you mean that the second drive just isn't being recognised? i.e. windows isn't giving it a drive letter like D: or E: ?

Is it internal(you opened it up and installed it) or external(connected by USB)??

    Internal:
I think we also need to know whether its Sata or IDE but slightly beside the point as I'll just give you basic stuff to check.

Could be a couple of things... First though... and I hope Im giving you enough credit as you were obvisously able to open the PC up - find the correct cable and connect it up... with power etc? Sorry if that sounds patronising, it isn't meant as such.

Second thing - In the BIOS (press F2 when it has the Dell(Not windows) loading screen at the start) and in one of the menus you should have the option for enabling and disabling certain things like IDE Slave and Master or Sata Primary etc.? Make sure whatever cable you connected it to

Third thing - Is your PC opertaing System "windows XP" or "windows 2000" or Vista? If it isn't we may an issue with plug and play drivers...

    External:
Very important - was the disk installed using the disk that came with it? USB drivers can be very temperamental!!

No both drivers are recognised both are connected right and both work fine with the exception of blank cd's, Football Manager 07 can work on both drives, cd's with music on them work, etc... Both drivers are IDE. Using Windows XP. No disk came with the new driver only Nero, but that drive works fine.

Just went to My Computer, and clicked on the drive where my music cd is and got this:

    D:/ is not accessible
    Incorrect Function

Did you remember to set the jumpers on the two cd / dvd drives you now have to "master" and "slave"?

Yup went I installed them about 2 weeks ago everything was running grand. But then about 2 days ago I noticed CD's blank or full are not recongised. DVD's will only play on the DVD/RW and not just the DVD/R.

I had the same problem with the drive in my XPS, the drive wouldn't recognise blank CD's but would recognise every other disc. Even normal CD's worked, just blank CD's caused a problem. Did a lot of searching on the web and found it was a problem with the drive and a firmware update would help.
So I tried updating the firmware and then uninstalling the drivers etc. Basically nothing worked and in the end I bought a new drive off Komplett for about €30. Saved me a lot of hassle.
If you can I would contact Dell and tell them your problem. You might get sent a new drive.
Failing that do a search for the drive model and see if there is any known problems (probably the same drive as mine tbh, can't remember it at the moment) and if you can get a firmware update.
Also you could remove the original drive and uninstall it and see if the new drive works (assuming it is a different make than the original one)
    /Dace

Cheers. Doubt there's anything wrong with either drive though, both are basically new. I'll try the firmware thing though.

set your new dvd/rw to master and your old cd drive to slave see does that work. I remeber i put a new cd drive into a pc and i just could not get the two of them to work together at all!!

    My iTunes wasn't up-to-date.

But still amazes me how a blank cd wouldn't show up on "My Computer", with an out-of-date iTunes. Bit weird.
