Just from reading mele's music photography thread
Ok folks this is probably not a great idea but i think it may be helpful to some, if not all of us.
There are a lot of different types of photographers here, doing their thing in a lot of different disciplines.

Youve got your mainstream sports guys like City Exile and PaulW and your not so mainstream sports like Calina's kitesurfing exploits.
    Youve got your music photographers
Youve got your Macro fans like julie
    Youve got your landscape types
Youve got your freelance Journo's etc
And your documentary folk like Thonda and Baz.

What i was thinking was how about putting everyones collective experiences and advice into certain threads, kind of like a big Boards.ie collective of practical advice, i.e gaining passes to gigs or sports events, how to go about freelancing for newspapers/magazines etc etc?
    Anyone up for it?

Excellent...I'm all for hearing of other people experiences..we've had a couple of guys down giving specific talks at our camera club, just shooting the breeze and sharing knowledge about their experiences all very worthwhile

Ok, in general, it sounds like a brilliant idea. One thing I will comment on, is things like how to gain a press pass to stuff. While it's not always that complex, and sometimes not even easy, but if everyone started to apply for passes, then I think they would become a lot more scarce.

I know I'm new to this, and this is my first season covering the rugby games, I did do some research and make some contacts when trying to gain photography access. I know people, and people know people, so networking is always useful.

But, if I told everyone on boards how to get access, then it would end up with 5-10 boards people applying, and then the people who do give out accreditation would wonder how serious we take it.

Do I sound bad? I'm sure for some events and sports, it can be as simple as contacting the administration body and just asking, but it can also be as complex as having to put together a portfolio, submitting and waiting for that to be reviewed and approved.

For this, sometimes you have to start small - local sports club coverage, build up to area team, then to province, then to national body etc.

Without giving direct straight answers .... it can really depend.

nice idea, but ultimately could work out to be a waste of time. Nobody reads long threads properly... Case and point, the "what camera should I buy" sticky. PITA. Even if you have a thread with every single imaginable piece of advice in it, someone will come on the next day, open a new thread and ask 10 questions that have already been covered to death in the big thread. Then people will get narky when theyre told to refer to the 'main' thread and even more narky when their thread is locked/deleted because it's a duplicate of what's already in the collective advice thread.

It's a nice idea, but something possibly more suited to being featured on a blog or something like that. Instead of being a straightforward neverending discussion, it'd be a tutorial or a 'this is how I achieve this effect' kind of learning situation. Much like the threads in digital darkroom...

hmmm fair enough points Paul + Rymus, and no paul you dont sound bad i did think that myself when typing it out.
But on the same token, whats the chances of everyone applying for passes to the same gig/sports event whatever at the same time?

Rymus...maybe then it would be better featured as a thread of the week type thing, where we pick a topic, say Portraiture and people talk about there own experiences/problems with that type of photography and the people who want to help out can?

imo that'd work better than having a definitive guide on a topic. More discussion based than classroom. Kinda like a big C&C thread on one specific topic.

All it takes is for someone to kick it off with a post about a particular topic. Throw in some ideas, questions, examples, links, away you go. If it takes off, we can sticky an archive post with links to the threads.

If I wasn't about to go to bed I might do one myself. Ah shame. Any takers?
