It's a great lens alright, I let my one go for around that price too (maybe a little less). The sharpness and colour rendition are great. You may well miss the extra 100mm off the long end of the 70-300 though, so think long and hard about it :)

It's a great lens. I sold mine (over a year ago now) for about that price. I recently bought the 70-200mm f/2.8 to replace it.

Paul how do you get on in sports at the 200mm length?
I recently bought a 200mm f2.8 and its a fantastic lens but i havnt had the chance to use it in sports terms yet.

Well, most (if not all) the rugby photos I've taken so far are with the 70-200mm f/2.8. That will change from now on though.

It's actually a brilliant lens, good and fast too.

lol well i cant really argue with your rugby shots.
Ive picked up a 1.4x extender for it just incase...dya think ill get away with the stop less?

I have to agree with Paul W as I have one too, it is a very fast lens,I use it at car rally's and all sports
PS dont forget AL Servo for moving objects

For the floodlight sports events, you really do need f/2.8. That extra stop will make a major difference.

I have the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS L, and it just wasn't enough for the conditions, so I had to splash out for the 300mm f/2.8.

I also have the 2x extender, but it seldom gets much use.

cool, thanks for that....theres no way i can afford the 300mm 2.8 at the minute.

paul would you sell your extender?

While I don't use the extender a lot, nope, wouldn't sell it. Knowing my luck, I'd sell it and then find I needed it for something.

Just how poor is the f4 Paul, say in LOI grounds? Really not worth getting at all?

City-Exile is the man to really answer that question. I think sometimes he even struggles with his 300mm f/2.8 in some of the LOI grounds.

    I'm sure he'll give a better idea.

I used an f2.8 70-200mm at the RSC last weekend and found it to cope well enough with the poor lighting conditions in the ground.
