hal.dll missing or corrupted. Help!

Have tried just about everything I could find oneline, to no avail, would appreciate it if anyone here could come to the rescue:

I switched on my PC last night (Dell dimension 5150c) for the first time in about a week and after opening windows it cut to a black screen telling me that "NTDLR is missing". After looking around online, I tried one solution involving creating a boot disc (here), this didn't work, but it brought up a new message, "hal.dll is missing or corrupted".

Then I got my hands on a recovery disk, which starts up fine, but gets to a menu asking me whether I want to exit, enter the recovery console, or start windows. Hitting the key to start windows brings me immediately to the blue screen of death, and when I re-start it goes through the same cycle again. I'm currently in the recovery console. I ran chkdsk and it told me pretty quickly 'The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems'. None of the commands I've seen suggested as solutions on other threads seem to work, e.g, I tried variants of "fixboot" and got nowhere. I think what I need to do is copy hal.dll from CD to hard drive, but don't know how to do it. Can anyone help? I really don't want to have to reformat the disc, but will do it if necessary....except I don't know how to do that either.....any help greatly welcome.

You can find the hal.dll file on the recovery cd probably in the i386 folder. you would have to start the recovery console an use the cd command to get into the directory on the cd. The file would be listed as hal.dl_ on the disk meaning it is a compressed file. you would need to use the expand command to expand it to the windows system directory. Hope this helps mate.

Presume Ibid is referring to a fresh install of Windows.

The corrupted .dll is called HAL.
