    Could someone tell me what the "#" symbol means in website speak

    As in;

    Is it like an abbreviation? for instance if a websites address was

    ww.Something.com/mail.27345897,*&^%$$£.278937498.html

    you could abbreviate it so it only shows up as "#"mail ??

    It marks an anchor on a page, which is often a URL but not always.

    E.g, the url of this page is http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=54369828

    If we make it
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=54369828#post54369828

    then your browser will jump down the page to the anchor named post54369828 which, in this case, is your original post. Hope thats clear.

    As far as I know(or at least in my professional experiance) the '#' symbol is used as a placeholder in URL's, it is also used before hex color codes(par example #fffffff),cant think of anything else off the top of my head. Has some uses in other languages however

    cornbb has it spot on. It marks an "anchor" on a page, so you can jump down to a specific point on the page usually.

    So lets say you had a thread with 40 posts & you wanted to refer someone to the 18th post, could you use this to bring the person to that exact post?

    If yes? is there any easy way of identifying a post number other then actually counting them? like in the right click properties?

    In the top right hand side of every post you will see a # followed by a number. The number is a link that will bring you to a page that displays just that post. e.g. http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=54374736&postcount=6
