E6850 and X6800 - what's the difference?

Except for the price of course...€250 for the E6850 and over €800 for the X6800 which is a slower processor with the same number of cores, slower FSB, same L2 cache, same architecture features...

I know the architecture of chips can vary (ie as with a 3.0Ghz E6850 and a 3.0GhZ Pentium D, very different altogether), but these really do seem very similar. I consider myself fairly well up on technology but this is one rpice difference I just can't get my head round. Is it simply a case of no-one bothering to reduce the price, or is anyone able to explain it?

The extreme edition has unlocked multiplier. Basically, it's an overclocking chip.

Edit: White falcon: You linked to a quad core and a dual core.

    E6850 and X6800

Seems the X6800 isn't available at Komplett/dabs any more.

Is the performance increase worth it though? You can overclock an E6850 to what, 3.6GhZ stable? How much further could you push the more expensive model, and is it possibly worth €600?

I definitely wouldn't pay the extra myself. I question whether you could push the X6800 on air as far as the E6850 with water (which would still be cheaper).

Extreme edition chips tend to hold their value longer also.

edit: HVW can be slow to drop their prices on the occasional product. The X6800 certainly isn't worth that much IMO. That's what people were paying for it around six months ago.

edit2: Seems they're going for similar prices new on ebay, but around 250 odd 2nd hand (you can be sure they've been overclocked to the max during their time).
