I notice that every some of the more powerful Mac systems still only come with 1gb of ram as standard at a time when most PCs come with 2gb (though Vista mostly to blame for this), so I'm just curious as to how the OS performs memory wise compared to XP?

Apple never put enough RAM in macs. 1gb was plenty on the PPC but the intel macs seem a lot more RAM hungry. And Leopard uses a lot more as well.

Tis annoying, u gotta get the 2.8 24" iMac to get 2gb ram... The rest have 1gb std. The Gfs iMac(intel) was running on 512mb ram for a while(1 stick died) and it was painfully slow. Getting back to a gig made a huge difference but it could deffo do with two...

I suppose the only good thing is that the new iMacs come with a 1gb stick instead of 2 x 512mb sticks... makes upgrading a bit easier

Be thankful you can get your own RAM for cheap, and install it in less than 2minutes!

Well for €1749 u'd expect at least 2gb ram... I aint comparing but dells basic config systems starting at about €700 come with 2gb

Yeah that's what I was wondering, it is just a terribly outdated selling scheme or is OSX incredibly resource friendly. :)

Does the 2.2ghz Macbook come with 1GB stick of RAM or 2 x 512mb sticks?

    2 x 512GB.

I have 1gb with OSX Tiger and it's grand.

Although admittedly I'm not exactly doing anything resource heavy but I haven't experienced any slowdown or anything.

    You wish! :D

I`m considering upgrading the ram on my imac(20" 2.16 dual core 2 with 1 GB ram).
Is it much of an operation to install the extra ram,and how much ram can I add?(I know I should kno this already:))

Changing the ram on the imac is a sinch... if its the new new one u can just buy a 1gb stick to get two gigs... If its the white one u'll need two 1gb sticks to get two gigs as it as 2x512mb in it at the mo...

Google for a guide on how to upgrade the ram..

    Thanks man.

I've put 3 in the MacBook and 2 GB in the iMac (white). Both are flying with Leonard. RAM is cheap at the mo.

    hugh

Your manual (sparse as it is) should have a guide to installing RAM.

I want to take a stick of RAM out of a Mac Mini and put it into a Mac Pro. Is this cool? Any dangers I should be on the lookout for?

Btw it is shocking that Mac Pros (€2,500ish with the basic configuration, minus screen) are still only shipping with 1GB RAM.

To answer the OPs question, OS X will run ok on 1GB but more is definitely recommended if anything more strenuous than web browsing/iTunes/word processing is attempted.

    You can't do that.
    At all.

The mini uses normal 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300) RAM.
The MP uses the expensive 667MHz DDR2 fully-buffered DIMM ECC.
Moreover, due to the MP's layout, you need Apple-approved modules with enlarged heatsinks!

You can look on crucial.com/eu/mac for the difference in prices -- and go " "
Not sure, but shop4memory.com might have better prices -- just remember that it HAS to be FB-DIMM ECC modules!

Thanks for that. I would have googled it but boards is just handier ;)

Looks like I'll need to talk my boss into shelling out for the decent stuff so.

I ordered my RAM from crucial and it arrived today(order Sunday I think).

A quick Google on istallation and five minutes later the job was done.:)

    I think I paid around €60 for 2 x 1 GB including courier delivery.
