National Student Champs - Feedback

    Hi guys,

Ok we're just starting to kick off our promotion campaign for the National Student Champs.

As with all of our events we like to think that poker is open to all but because for some reason sponsors like to throw money and free stuff at layabout students this tournament will be restricted to anyone currently studying, be it leaving cert (over 18's only) to mature students, part-time or full-time.

In order to cash in this tournament we will be looking for student I.D. If you can't satisfy our requirements to prove that you are a student the prize-pool will be re-distributed.

What I really want is feedback as regards a venue first of all.....The first Student Champs I ran was in the Gresham Hotel Dublin, then last year Derek and myself set up PokerIreland.ie and ran the Student Champs in the RDS.

Do you think the tournament would have as much appeal in say for example, Cork, Limerick, Galway???....Actually might do a pole on this now (it will have only a slight bearing on the final decision)...

As regards poker socs we would really appreciate it if you got behind this event from the start.....last year I really had to struggle to get in the door of a lot of colleges, it would be nice not to have to do too much work this time around :)

    ____________

STUDENT POKER PLAYERS EMAIL ME NOW - STEPHEN@POKERIRELAND.IE - IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO PRE-REGISTER FOR THE NATIONAL STUDENT POKER CHAMPS 2008.

THERE ARE NO OBLIGATIONS WITH REGARD TO PLAYING WHEN YOU PRE-REGISTER. IT JUST MEANS THAT I HAVE A CONTACT EMAIL ADDRESS ON FILE FOR YOU TO GET FEEDBACK, GIVE DETAILS AND TO GET HELP PROMOTING THE TOURNAMENT....BASICALLY, THE MORE PLAYERS WE HAVE ON FILE THE BETTER...IT JUST MAKES IT MORE APPEALING FOR MERMAID POKER TO INVEST IN.

i didn't play in this last year but was it held in around january?

any idea on dates because ive exams in around that time.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,860 ✭✭✭ditpoker

have it in feb as to avoid exam clashes as best as possible.
    let me play
have to keep it in dublin, just makes so much sense for so many reasons.
have day one an early start with a student friendly side event with a bit of play kicking off at 4 or 5 for players knocked out/blow in non students.
    have student friendly cash games
hire me as tournament director to hand out my own brand of thomas kremsor-esque authority - and pay me a fortune for it...

if i think of more, i'll be back...

and fire rob for wearing a yellow shirt.

Thats part of the reason we need feedback....We set it last year to clash with as few exams as possible....We'll be doing the same again this year but need to get contacts with all of the poker soc heads again this year. We're thinking of late Feb right now.

    ____________

Players and Poker soc heads; Please post a thread about the National Student Champs 2008 on your college forum so that we can get reach the widest possible audience with this...

Obviously I agree, makes it much handier (though more expensive) to organise. Just thought there would be some support for the likes of Limerick or Cork as both have a large student population and almost every big tournament is held in Dublin (for obvious reasons granted) so it would be a change - I'm even thinking of somewhere like Athlone, only an hour and a bit from Dublin so no need for accom for Dublin based students...

Good point and again easier to book a conference room for a weekday than a weekend.....I think the numbers will be higher for a Saturday tournament though.

will this be a two day event?

just on basics if 50% of players are dubs then having it somewhere else will mean lots of them wont pay for accomadtion and so fourth.

i always felt that a way to do this would be teams and that way colleges would all be represented and it would not matter where held as a team would go anywhere.

however this may effect field size and so fourth. give jeff td job nobody else will employe him!!!

True enough, so is Kilkenny and more to the point so is Belfast :).....I picked out the four cities with the largest student population where it is legal to run a poker tournament. I know Waterford I.T. is big but its the only college for miles around (isn't it???).

Kilkenny isn't a city though, there are only 5 city councils in Ireland; Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford. Here isn't the place to argue this though!

Count the WIT Poker Soc in for this, depending on the buyin, we hope to be able to send a decent sized busload up. I'll let you know about our exam dates as soon as I can.

Middle of February FTW! We were hopin to run ours (the Masters) on the 5th March (a Wednesday) so our thunder will be suitably stolen if you have it at the end of Feb.

Edit: Galway's a great spot to go out in so if i's gonna be moved from Dublin that's where'd get my vote.

Would it be necessary to be involved/part of the college poker soc to enter your team? As we'll be resurrecting the student part of the IPO Team Event winners :)

I would doubt it. It would just make life easier for Stephen and co to be able to liase with a Poker society rather than hundreds of individual students.

I'll deal at this if needed and run my tables with an iron fist calling every mishap from the student bums*

*Graduated this year so now hate the students.

Dont think Limerick has a suitable catchment for this; I'd say either Dublin or Cork would be the obvious choices.

UL's exam times have changed as well, exams are now before Christmas so there will be no conflict of dates for this.

    PM sent

Kilkenny is advertised as the medieval city to tourists, how can you not call it a city?

Cheers mate, the buy-in will be somewhere between €65 and €100 + 10%reg (opinions on this too please???)....WIT would be one of the colleges that we would be relying on for good numbers, seeing as how there are soooo many good players in the South East :D

Brilliant idea, I'll set up a marquee (not an idea how to spell that word) out my back garden.

    Just checked my emails;

DCU wins the watch for the first college to pre-register a player.

Guys and gals if you don't already get the odd email from me please send me over an email with any feedback about the tournament....We're looking for new ideas and would like to hear opinions on the buy-in, structure, number of days to play and if nothing else just email saying "I would like to pre-register for the Student Champs 2008" so that I can send you out some information directly and also gauge the interest.

We need to start getting the word about this tournament out there now....How big of a field is achievable for this, or rather, what should we aim for??? We're looking for a bit of direction after the IPO :)
