I have movie clip in avi format but none of my players wmp, realplayer are able to play it, the error just says it's unsupported. How can I find out what is required?

I also tried converting to dvd with ConvertXToDVD but got an error too.

How can I find what codec or wahatever is required to play or conert to dvd?

AVI is just an envelope. The file header says which codec to use. Which can even include codecs implemented by a proprietary piece of hardware.

I have an old 160MHz 486 with a Hardware Video Editing card that still does codecs not commonly available on PCs on any Media Player in Software. I can use Adobe Premiere on Windows for WorkGroups or Win98 to transcode. The old ISA card is not supported on anything other than WFWG3.11 and Win95. I managed to get the Win95 drivers working on Win98. NT4.0, Win ME, Win2K, XP etc is impossible.

Some applications don't even write the header properly making AVIs with VERY limited compatibility.
